The master’s degree is where financial technology exists as a degree title in its own right. An online MS in Financial Technology is built for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree and typically already have one half of the field – a finance or economics background needing technical skill, or a computing background needing financial domain knowledge. Many programs deliver the same content as a fintech track inside an MS in Finance, MS in Business Analytics, or MS in Computer Science, which is why the course list matters more than the diploma text.

It is a graduate program that builds advanced training in financial data analysis, payments and transaction infrastructure, digital assets, and the technology and regulation of financial services, delivered through online coursework. It is the degree level at which “financial technology” is commonly offered as a standalone title.
Master of Science in Financial Technology is the most direct title. Equivalent training also appears as an MS in Finance, MS in Business Analytics, MS in Computer Science, or an MBA with a fintech concentration or track. Compare required course lists rather than titles, because the same title covers very different curricula at different schools.
Typically 30 to 36 semester hours, commonly one to two years full-time and longer part-time. Programs designed for working professionals often stretch across two to three years at a reduced course load.
It varies more here than in most fields, because programs are built for different incoming populations. Business-school programs usually assume undergraduate finance or economics and statistics, and often teach programming from scratch. Computing-school programs usually assume programming fluency and teach the finance. Read the prerequisite list closely and be honest about which half you are missing.
Commonly, yes. Typical splits include a quantitative or analytics track, a payments and infrastructure track, and a digital assets or blockchain track, sometimes with a compliance and regulatory technology option. Some programs also offer a thesis option, though an applied capstone is far more usual in this field.
A completed bachelor’s degree, transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose are standard. Some programs request letters of recommendation, evidence of quantitative or programming coursework, or GMAT or GRE scores, though many online programs are test-optional. Work experience in finance or technology is often weighed favorably and sometimes substitutes for coursework prerequisites.

Requirements vary by school, but most programs require a completed bachelor’s degree. Common elements include transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose. Beyond that, expectations track the program’s home department: business-school programs typically want evidence of quantitative coursework and sometimes work experience, while computing-school programs typically want evidence you can program.
Applicants coming from outside both finance and computing are not automatically excluded. Some programs admit them with conditional status, a required bridge sequence in statistics or programming, or a recommendation to complete prerequisite coursework first. Ask admissions directly what they expect rather than inferring it from the catalog, and ask specifically what the typical admitted student’s background looks like – that answer tells you what the courses will assume.
A bachelor’s pathway – typically a finance, business analytics, or computer science major with fintech coursework – is a workable entry point into analyst and engineering roles. A master’s is more commonly pursued to pivot into fintech from an adjacent field, to add the technical half to a finance career or the finance half to a technical one, or to reach specialized quantitative roles that assume graduate coursework.
