Online Bachelor's in Theology: 2026 Programs

A bachelor’s in this silo is usually a BA or BS in Theology, Biblical Studies, or Christian Ministry. Those titles overlap more than catalogs imply, and none of them ordains you. The undergraduate degree is the academic and ministry-practice foundation. In denominations that require seminary for ordination, it is the feeder into an MDiv, not a substitute for one. In denominations that ordain without seminary, it is often the credential a search committee actually reads. Read the required course list, not the major name.

This page explains the titles you will encounter, what the coursework covers, what a bachelor’s can and cannot authorize, and how to compare programs honestly.

Quick answers

Can I get a bachelor’s degree in theology online?

Yes. It is offered as a BA or BS in Theology, Biblical Studies, or Christian Ministry, and sometimes as a religion or ministry concentration inside a liberal arts degree. Confirm recognized institutional accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education database.

Does a theology bachelor’s ordain me?

No. Ordination is a denominational process – eldership, session, bishop, ordination council – not a state license and not a diploma. Some churches will call a bachelor’s-prepared person to ministry. Many Protestant denominations that treat the MDiv as the standard credential will not. Catholic priesthood is a separate seminary path.

How is theology different from biblical studies or Christian ministry?

Theology puts more weight on doctrine, church history, and systematic or constructive theology. Biblical studies puts more weight on scripture, languages, and hermeneutics. Christian ministry puts more weight on preaching, pastoral care, education, and leadership practice. Many programs mix all three. Compare the upper-division list.

How many credits is a bachelor’s degree?

Approximately 120 semester hours, typically four years full-time. The theology or ministry core is usually concentrated in the junior and senior years after general education.

Is ATS accreditation required at the bachelor’s level?

Usually no. The Association of Theological Schools Commission on Accrediting evaluates graduate seminary degrees. For an undergraduate BA, recognized institutional accreditation is the check that matters. ATS becomes the extra check if you already know you need an MDiv.

Is a bachelor’s enough to become a pastor?

It depends entirely on your denomination. Do not infer the answer from a program page. Ask the body that will actually vote, lay on hands, or issue a license to preach.

Schools to compare

How We Rank Schools

Every school list on this site is ordered by the BOC Score, computed from the most recent school-level data published by the U.S. Department of Education (College Scorecard and IPEDS). To qualify, a school must be currently operating and accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Each eligible school is then scored on five measures, percentile-ranked against schools at the same credential level:

  • Graduation rate 30%
  • Median earnings, 10 years after entry 25%
  • Average net price (lower is better) 20%
  • Retention rate 15%
  • Fully online availability 10%

Schools without enough outcome data appear after ranked schools, without a score. Advertising never affects these rankings. Read the full methodology.

The main undergraduate pathways

Theology

A BA or BS in Theology is the most explicitly doctrinal route: scripture, church history, systematic theology, ethics, and often a capstone in a theological question rather than a ministry placement. It is a good fit if you may continue to an MA or MDiv, or if you want the academic shape of the field rather than a youth-ministry skill set.

Biblical studies

Biblical Studies leans on Old and New Testament, hermeneutics, and, in stronger programs, introductory Greek or Hebrew. It is a good fit if the text is the draw and you are willing to add ministry practice later, in a first call or in seminary.

Christian ministry

Christian Ministry is the applied undergraduate title: preaching or communication, pastoral care, Christian education, evangelism, and a practicum in a congregation. It is a good fit if you are already serving in a church and need the degree a search committee asked for. It is not a shortcut around denominations that require an MDiv.

Typical coursework in a bachelor’s program

Course TopicWhat You Learn
Old and New TestamentContent, context, and major interpretive issues in the canon
HermeneuticsHow to read scripture in a tradition, not only how to quote it
Church HistoryThe development of doctrine, institutions, and practice
Systematic or Constructive TheologyThe doctrines your tradition actually teaches, and the arguments for them
Christian EthicsMoral theology applied to personal, congregational, and public questions
Pastoral CareListening, presence, and referral – not a clinical counseling license
Preaching or Ministry CommunicationPreparing and delivering a sermon or teaching a congregation
Practicum or CapstoneSupervised ministry hours or a research project, depending on the major

Skills you may build

  • Reading scripture with historical and theological context, not only devotionally
  • Explaining a doctrine in language a congregation can actually use
  • Planning worship, teaching, or a discipleship sequence
  • Offering pastoral presence and knowing when to refer someone to a licensed clinician
  • Writing and speaking in the register of the church you serve
  • Taking supervision from a pastor, mentor, or field-education director

Pastoral care coursework does not qualify you as a licensed counselor. If independent clinical practice is the goal, see the counseling and psychology guides.

Prerequisites, transfer, and degree planning

The theology core generally sits behind a composition and general-education sequence. Upper-division biblical or theology courses may assume introductory survey courses. Before you enroll, confirm:

  • Which introductory Bible or theology courses gate the major core
  • How often each upper-division course is offered online, and in which terms
  • Whether a practicum requires a local congregation and a named supervisor
  • Whether biblical language courses are required, recommended, or optional

Transfer credit can shorten a bachelor’s substantially, particularly for general education. Rules vary by institution, so confirm the maximum transfer credits, the minimum grade, whether credits apply to the major core or only to electives, and residency requirements. See Affordable Online Theology Degrees for more on managing total program cost. If you are moving faster than a standard four-year plan, compare accelerated theology programs.

Accreditation and program quality checks

Verify that the institution holds accreditation from a recognized institutional accreditor through the U.S. Department of Education database. ATS Commission on Accrediting status is the extra check at the graduate seminary level, not a substitute for institutional accreditation on a BA.

A bachelor’s in theology or Christian ministry does not license you to practice counseling, does not ordain you, and does not complete Catholic priestly formation. Those are separate processes with separate authorities.

Bachelor’s vs a master’s or MDiv

A bachelor’s is the right credential when you need a four-year degree, when your denomination will consider you for ministry with it, or when you are preparing for seminary. An MA, MTS, or MDiv is the next credential when a denomination, chaplaincy board, or academic path requires graduate theological education. The MDiv is the one that most often stands in as the ordination degree in Protestant churches that have a formal candidacy process.
