Online technical communication degrees use the same asynchronous, synchronous, and hybrid formats as other online programs, and this is one of the fields where the online format is arguably a better simulation of the job than a classroom is. Documentation work is already distributed and asynchronous: you request information from an engineer in another time zone, review changes in a pull request, and coordinate through written channels. A well-run online program has you practicing that from day one.

Technical communication programs commonly use asynchronous, synchronous, or hybrid formats. The format mainly changes scheduling and interaction, not the core academic content.
Asynchronous courses let you access lectures and materials on your own schedule within a defined timeframe. They typically still use weekly deadlines for drafts, revisions, peer reviews, and discussion posts.
Expect some combination of an authoring or help-authoring tool, a structured authoring environment for DITA or a comparable standard, a Markdown or AsciiDoc editor with Git for docs-as-code work, a graphics or screen-capture tool, and a prototyping or design tool in UX writing courses. Ask which licenses the school provides and which you are expected to buy.
Usually not. Most documentation tooling runs comfortably on an ordinary laptop. The exceptions are structured authoring environments and some help-authoring tools, which have specific operating system requirements – a few remain Windows-only. Confirm compatibility before you enroll if you work on a Mac or Linux machine.
Remotely, usually with recruited participants over screen sharing, sometimes with unmoderated testing platforms. This is genuinely how much industry testing is done now, so the online version is not a compromise. It does require more lead time to recruit participants, which is worth planning for.

Asynchronous courses let students access lectures and materials on their own schedule within a defined timeframe.
This is the most common format in online technical communication programs and generally the one working students prefer. The tradeoff is that written feedback on a document is slower and less rich than a conversation about it – an instructor can mark what is wrong with a procedure in comments, but the reasoning behind an editorial decision often lands better when it is spoken.
Synchronous courses are built around scheduled live sessions students attend online.
This format suits students who benefit from watching an experienced editor work through a document in real time. Live critique sessions, where a piece of student writing is edited in front of the class, are one of the most effective teaching methods in this field and are difficult to replicate asynchronously.
Hybrid formats combine asynchronous coursework with periodic live sessions.
Some graduate programs also include a short optional or required on-campus residency, typically for portfolio presentations or intensive workshops. If travel is a constraint, confirm this before enrolling.
Technical communication coursework is production work, and the environment is part of the curriculum. Expect some combination of:

Technical communication coursework distributes unevenly across a week in a way that catches people off guard. Reading and analysis take the time you budget. A document revision after substantive feedback, or a first attempt at building reusable topics in a structured authoring tool, takes as long as it takes. Client and group projects add a second variable: other people’s response times, which you do not control.

Online technical communication students typically have access to academic and technical support, though quality varies more than availability.
Portfolio review is the support service worth asking about specifically in this field. A career center that reviews resumes but has never looked at a documentation portfolio is offering you half of what you need.
A good format choice depends on your schedule, your experience level, and how you take feedback.
