Technical communication is one of the few writing-adjacent fields where a named bachelor’s degree genuinely exists and is widely offered online. You will find it under several titles – BS or BA in Technical Communication, Technical Writing, Professional and Technical Communication, or Scientific and Technical Communication – and the variation in title matters less than where the program is housed and what it makes you build. The same four-year degree can be a rhetoric-heavy English program with a documentation emphasis or an engineering-college program that expects you to work in a version-controlled toolchain from your second year.

Technical communication programs sit in three different kinds of departments, and the home department predicts the emphasis better than the degree title does.
Programs in English or writing departments generally push hardest on rhetoric, editing, and audience analysis. Graduates tend to write and edit exceptionally well and sometimes arrive underprepared for the tooling side. Programs in communication departments often blend technical documentation with organizational and visual communication, which broadens the career options and dilutes the specialization. Programs in engineering or technology colleges typically require more technical coursework, teach the documentation toolchain seriously, and produce graduates who are comfortable in a developer environment.
None of these is wrong. Pick the one whose weakness you can cover on your own and whose strength you cannot.
This is the most consequential difference between programs. Ask what environments students author in. Two credible answers exist. One is structured, topic-based authoring – DITA or a comparable XML standard, worked in a real authoring tool, with content reused across multiple outputs from a single source. The other is docs-as-code: content written in Markdown or AsciiDoc, stored in Git, reviewed through pull requests, and published by an automated build. A program that teaches one well and introduces the other is preparing you for the market. A program that never moves past a word processor is teaching a version of this job that mostly no longer exists.

Technical communication hiring is portfolio-driven to a degree that surprises students coming from other majors. A posting will list a bachelor’s degree as a requirement and then spend the interview on your writing samples. Hiring managers want to see whether you can structure a procedure, whether your API reference is accurate, whether your interface copy is tight, and whether you can explain the decisions you made.
