What distinguishes technical communication programs from each other

Where the program is housed

Technical communication programs sit in three different kinds of departments, and the home department predicts the emphasis better than the degree title does.

Programs in English or writing departments generally push hardest on rhetoric, editing, and audience analysis. Graduates tend to write and edit exceptionally well and sometimes arrive underprepared for the tooling side. Programs in communication departments often blend technical documentation with organizational and visual communication, which broadens the career options and dilutes the specialization. Programs in engineering or technology colleges typically require more technical coursework, teach the documentation toolchain seriously, and produce graduates who are comfortable in a developer environment.

None of these is wrong. Pick the one whose weakness you can cover on your own and whose strength you cannot.

Whether the toolchain is real
