Technical communication curricula generally move through three layers, and the middle one is what separates a technical communication degree from a general writing degree.
The first layer is rhetoric and audience. Who is reading this, what are they trying to accomplish, what do they already know, and what will they do with the answer? Coursework covers audience and task analysis, plain-language principles, technical editing at the sentence and document level, and document design – typography, layout, tables, and the visual conventions that make procedures scannable. This is also where you learn to write a procedure that survives contact with a stressed user.
The second layer is structure and tooling. Modern documentation is rarely written as standalone documents. Topic-based authoring breaks content into reusable units that can be assembled into different outputs – a practice formalized in DITA, an XML standard for structured technical content, and in similar component content management approaches.
