The master’s is the degree level that matters most in statistics. For the occupation titled statistician – which had a median annual wage of $105,650 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS) – a master’s degree is the common entry expectation, and in government statistical agencies, pharmaceutical and clinical research, and survey research organizations it is frequently stated outright. That makes an online MS in Statistics or MS in Applied Statistics a credential with a clear function rather than a general upgrade.
These programs assume you arrive with the mathematics. They are designed for students holding a bachelor’s in statistics, mathematics, economics, engineering, or another quantitative field, and for working professionals who need the theory their applied job has outgrown.
It is a graduate program delivering advanced training in statistical theory, modeling, and computing through online coursework. Programs generally split into theory-forward MS in Statistics degrees and practice-forward MS in Applied Statistics degrees, with the required core telling you which one you are looking at regardless of the title.
MS in Statistics and MS in Applied Statistics are the two main ones. MS in Biostatistics is the health and clinical research variant, and some schools offer an MS in Statistics with a data science concentration. Compare required course lists rather than titles – the presence or absence of a measure-theoretic or advanced mathematical statistics sequence is the real dividing line.

The prerequisite review is stricter here than in many fields.
