At the graduate level the field is usually titled software engineering rather than software development. An online MS in Software Engineering is built for people who can already write software and want depth in the decisions that get harder as systems and teams grow: architecture, distributed system design, quality strategy, security, and the process choices that determine whether a codebase stays workable. Some schools deliver equivalent training as a software engineering track inside an MS in Computer Science or an MS in Information Technology, which is why the required course list matters more than the diploma text.

It is a graduate program covering software architecture and design, requirements engineering, quality and testing strategy, distributed and cloud-based systems, secure development, and engineering process and management, delivered through online coursework. It assumes you can already program and focuses on the decisions above the level of individual code.
Master of Science in Software Engineering is the most direct title. Equivalent training also appears as an MS in Computer Science, MS in Software Development, or MS in Information Technology with a software engineering track. Compare required course lists rather than titles.
Typically 30 to 36 semester hours, commonly one to two years full-time and longer part-time. Programs designed for working developers often run two to three years at a reduced course load, since most students are employed full-time.
Most assume programming fluency in at least one language, plus prior coursework or demonstrated experience in data structures, and often databases and discrete mathematics. Applicants from other fields are frequently admitted with a bridge or foundations sequence covering programming and data structures before the graduate core begins.
Often, yes. Bridge pathways for career changers are common in this field, more so than in most graduate computing programs. Expect to complete prerequisite coursework in programming and data structures, either before admission or as additional credits inside the program. Ask what those credits cost and whether they count toward the degree.
A thesis track culminates in original research supervised by a faculty member and is the better preparation for doctoral study. A capstone or applied project track culminates in a substantial engineering project and is the more common choice for practitioners. Most software engineering master’s programs emphasize the applied track.

Requirements vary by school, but most programs require a completed bachelor’s degree, transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose. Because these programs draw heavily from working professionals, several years of development experience often carries real weight in the review, and some programs will substitute demonstrated experience for missing prerequisite coursework.
Applicants from outside computing are not automatically excluded, and this field accommodates career changers better than most. Common routes are a bridge sequence in programming and data structures completed before the core, conditional admission with prerequisites completed in the first year, or a graduate certificate that converts to degree credit. Ask admissions directly what applies to your background rather than inferring it from the catalog, and ask whether bridge credits are billed at the graduate rate.
A bachelor’s in software development is the standard credential for developer roles and is sufficient for most careers in the field. A master’s is typically pursued for one of three reasons: depth in architecture, distributed systems, or quality engineering; movement toward technical leadership where design authority matters; or a structured pivot into software from another field. If you already hold a computing bachelor’s and are early in your career, work experience frequently does more for your trajectory than an immediate master’s – which is why so many of these programs are built for part-time students who are already employed.
