The Master of Social Work (MSW) is the profession’s flagship credential. It is the required degree for master’s-level licensure (LMSW) and clinical licensure (LCSW), and it is the gateway to therapy practice, healthcare and school social work, and agency leadership. In the latest College Scorecard reporting year, 363 institutions awarded 68,040 MSW degrees – making it one of the most widely awarded graduate degrees in the helping professions.
Online MSW programs deliver coursework remotely and arrange supervised field placements in your community. They come in two tracks: a traditional MSW (about two years, open to any bachelor’s major) and an advanced-standing MSW (about one year, for BSW graduates from CSWE-accredited programs).
An online Master of Social Work delivers graduate social work coursework remotely while you complete supervised field education at agencies near you. It is the required degree for LMSW and LCSW licensure in every state.
No. Traditional MSW programs accept applicants from any bachelor’s major. A BSW from a CSWE-accredited program qualifies you for advanced standing, which shortens the MSW to about one year.
An advanced-standing MSW waives the generalist first year for CSWE-accredited BSW graduates. Students enter directly into the specialization year and typically finish in about one year of full-time study.
College Scorecard data shows MSW graduates earn a median of $51,342 one year after graduation and $62,597 four years out. Median debt is $39,330.
Yes, if the program is CSWE-accredited. After the MSW, the LCSW requires a state-defined period of supervised clinical experience plus the ASWB Clinical exam. Verify your state’s requirements before enrolling.
Yes. All CSWE-accredited MSW programs require supervised field education in agency settings. Hour requirements vary by program and track; online programs help arrange local placements.

Every school list on this site is ordered by the BOC Score, computed from the most recent school-level data published by the U.S. Department of Education (College Scorecard and IPEDS). To qualify, a school must be currently operating and accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Each eligible school is then scored on five measures, percentile-ranked against schools at the same credential level:
Schools without enough outcome data appear after ranked schools, without a score. Advertising never affects these rankings. Read the full methodology.

The single biggest structural decision in MSW planning is which track you qualify for:
| Traditional MSW | Advanced-Standing MSW | |
|---|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Any bachelor’s degree | BSW from a CSWE-accredited program (usually recent, with a minimum GPA) |
| Typical length | ~2 years full-time | ~1 year full-time |
| Year 1 | Generalist practice curriculum + field placement | Waived |
| Year 2 | Specialization curriculum + advanced field placement | Specialization curriculum + advanced field placement |
| Cost implication | Two years of graduate tuition | Roughly half the graduate tuition |
Both tracks finish in the same place: an identical MSW degree and identical licensure eligibility. If you already hold a CSWE-accredited BSW, advanced standing is almost always the better financial choice. If your bachelor’s is in another field, you do not need to “redo” undergrad – traditional MSW programs are designed for you.
Many online programs also offer part-time tracks (commonly three to four years traditional, two years advanced standing). See: Part-Time Social Work Programs and Accelerated Social Work Programs
Specialization-year content depends on your concentration:
For course-level details, see: Social Work Curriculum. To explore specializations, see: Social Work Concentrations, including Clinical Social Work, Medical Social Work, and School Social Work.
Field education is required at the master’s level, and the hour commitment is substantial – plan for it like a part-time job. Requirements vary by program and track, so confirm with each school:
For most students, the MSW is a means to licensure. The sequence:
The LCSW authorizes independent diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, private practice, and insurance billing. Mental health and substance abuse social workers earn a median $60,280, and healthcare social workers earn a median $67,880 (BLS OEWS, May 2025) – and licensed clinicians occupy the upper portion of those distributions. The Association of Social Work Boards links to every state board.
| Role | Related BLS Occupation | Median Annual Wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Medical/hospital social worker | Healthcare Social Worker | $67,880 |
| Clinical therapist (post-LCSW) | Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Worker | $60,280 |
| School social worker | Child, Family, and School Social Worker | $59,550 |
| Specialized practice roles | Social Worker, All Other | $71,900 |
| Program director / agency leader | Social and Community Service Manager | $80,390 |

CSWE accredits at the baccalaureate and master’s levels, and every state requires a CSWE-accredited MSW for LMSW/LCSW licensure. Check program status in the CSWE directory and institutional accreditation in the U.S. Department of Education database. Programs “in candidacy” merit extra diligence – ask how your state board treats candidate-program graduates. Full guidance: Social Work Accreditation
