Online Master's in Social Work (MSW)

The Master of Social Work (MSW) is the profession’s flagship credential. It is the required degree for master’s-level licensure (LMSW) and clinical licensure (LCSW), and it is the gateway to therapy practice, healthcare and school social work, and agency leadership. In the latest College Scorecard reporting year, 363 institutions awarded 68,040 MSW degrees – making it one of the most widely awarded graduate degrees in the helping professions.

Online MSW programs deliver coursework remotely and arrange supervised field placements in your community. They come in two tracks: a traditional MSW (about two years, open to any bachelor’s major) and an advanced-standing MSW (about one year, for BSW graduates from CSWE-accredited programs).

Quick answers

What is an online MSW?

An online Master of Social Work delivers graduate social work coursework remotely while you complete supervised field education at agencies near you. It is the required degree for LMSW and LCSW licensure in every state.

Do I need a BSW to apply?

No. Traditional MSW programs accept applicants from any bachelor’s major. A BSW from a CSWE-accredited program qualifies you for advanced standing, which shortens the MSW to about one year.

What is an advanced-standing MSW?

An advanced-standing MSW waives the generalist first year for CSWE-accredited BSW graduates. Students enter directly into the specialization year and typically finish in about one year of full-time study.

What do MSW graduates earn?

College Scorecard data shows MSW graduates earn a median of $51,342 one year after graduation and $62,597 four years out. Median debt is $39,330.

Does an online MSW lead to clinical licensure?

Yes, if the program is CSWE-accredited. After the MSW, the LCSW requires a state-defined period of supervised clinical experience plus the ASWB Clinical exam. Verify your state’s requirements before enrolling.

Does an online MSW require in-person hours?

Yes. All CSWE-accredited MSW programs require supervised field education in agency settings. Hour requirements vary by program and track; online programs help arrange local placements.

Schools to compare

How We Rank Schools

Every school list on this site is ordered by the BOC Score, computed from the most recent school-level data published by the U.S. Department of Education (College Scorecard and IPEDS). To qualify, a school must be currently operating and accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Each eligible school is then scored on five measures, percentile-ranked against schools at the same credential level:

  • Graduation rate 30%
  • Median earnings, 10 years after entry 25%
  • Average net price (lower is better) 20%
  • Retention rate 15%
  • Fully online availability 10%

Schools without enough outcome data appear after ranked schools, without a score. Advertising never affects these rankings. Read the full methodology.

Traditional vs advanced-standing MSW

The single biggest structural decision in MSW planning is which track you qualify for:

Traditional MSWAdvanced-Standing MSW
Who qualifiesAny bachelor’s degreeBSW from a CSWE-accredited program (usually recent, with a minimum GPA)
Typical length~2 years full-time~1 year full-time
Year 1Generalist practice curriculum + field placementWaived
Year 2Specialization curriculum + advanced field placementSpecialization curriculum + advanced field placement
Cost implicationTwo years of graduate tuitionRoughly half the graduate tuition

Both tracks finish in the same place: an identical MSW degree and identical licensure eligibility. If you already hold a CSWE-accredited BSW, advanced standing is almost always the better financial choice. If your bachelor’s is in another field, you do not need to “redo” undergrad – traditional MSW programs are designed for you.

Many online programs also offer part-time tracks (commonly three to four years traditional, two years advanced standing). See: Part-Time Social Work Programs and Accelerated Social Work Programs

What you study in an online MSW

Generalist year (traditional track)

  • Human behavior and the social environment
  • Social welfare policy and services
  • Generalist practice with individuals, families, groups, and communities
  • Research methods and program evaluation
  • Foundation field placement with integrative seminar

Specialization year (both tracks)

Specialization-year content depends on your concentration:

  • Clinical/direct practice: psychopathology and DSM-informed assessment, evidence-based therapies (CBT, motivational interviewing, trauma-focused approaches), clinical practice with specific populations
  • Macro/leadership: program administration, community organizing, policy practice, grant writing and evaluation
  • Advanced field placement: a second supervised placement aligned with your specialization

For course-level details, see: Social Work Curriculum. To explore specializations, see: Social Work Concentrations, including Clinical Social Work, Medical Social Work, and School Social Work.

Field education in an online MSW

Field education is required at the master’s level, and the hour commitment is substantial – plan for it like a part-time job. Requirements vary by program and track, so confirm with each school:

  • Total supervised hours required for your track (traditional students complete placements in both years; advanced-standing students complete the advanced placement only)
  • Whether the program finds and approves placements for online students or you must secure your own
  • Employment-based placement policies, if you already work in human services
  • Whether placements satisfy the supervised-practice expectations of the state where you plan to be licensed
Ask every program one question in writing before you apply: “How do you arrange field placements for online students in my ZIP code, and what happens if a placement falls through mid-term?” The quality of the answer predicts the quality of the experience.

The MSW-to-LCSW pathway

For most students, the MSW is a means to licensure. The sequence:

  1. Earn the MSW from a CSWE-accredited program
  2. LMSW (optional in some states, required step in others): pass the ASWB Masters exam for master’s-level, typically supervised, practice
  3. Supervised clinical experience: complete your state’s required period of post-MSW clinical practice under an approved supervisor (hours and duration vary by state – verify with your board)
  4. LCSW: pass the ASWB Clinical exam and apply for independent clinical licensure

The LCSW authorizes independent diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, private practice, and insurance billing. Mental health and substance abuse social workers earn a median $60,280, and healthcare social workers earn a median $67,880 (BLS OEWS, May 2025) – and licensed clinicians occupy the upper portion of those distributions. The Association of Social Work Boards links to every state board.

Admissions requirements

Online MSW programs commonly require:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (any major for traditional track; CSWE-accredited BSW for advanced standing)
  • Official transcripts; many programs set minimum GPA expectations, with conditional admission options
  • Personal statement focused on fit with social work values
  • Letters of recommendation (academic or professional)
  • Resume; human services experience strengthens applications but is rarely mandatory
  • GRE: rarely required for MSW programs

Background checks are required before field placement. Full checklist: Social Work Admissions Requirements

Cost and debt for an MSW

College Scorecard data puts median MSW debt at $39,330 against median earnings of $51,342 one year out and $62,597 four years out. Ways to manage the cost:

  • Advanced standing – one year of tuition instead of two, for eligible BSW graduates
  • Employer tuition benefits – common at hospitals and large agencies

Resources: Affordable Social Work Programs

Accreditation: verify before you apply

CSWE accredits at the baccalaureate and master’s levels, and every state requires a CSWE-accredited MSW for LMSW/LCSW licensure. Check program status in the CSWE directory and institutional accreditation in the U.S. Department of Education database. Programs “in candidacy” merit extra diligence – ask how your state board treats candidate-program graduates. Full guidance: Social Work Accreditation
