An online Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is the profession’s entry-level practice degree. It prepares students for generalist social work – case management, advocacy, and direct services – and it is the only undergraduate degree that unlocks two distinct advantages: baccalaureate-level licensure (LBSW) in many states, and advanced-standing admission to MSW programs, which can cut graduate study to about one year.
Unlike a general human services or psychology bachelor’s, a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program includes supervised field education and meets the educational requirement for social work licensure at the bachelor’s tier.
An online Bachelor of Social Work is a four-year undergraduate degree in generalist social work practice, delivered through online coursework with a supervised field placement arranged in your local community.
Yes. Only a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program meets the education requirement for social work licensure and qualifies graduates for advanced-standing MSW admission. Human services and psychology degrees do not.
Yes. CSWE-accredited BSW programs require a supervised field placement in an agency setting. Required hours vary by program, and online programs typically help arrange placements near where you live.
In many states, yes – BSW graduates can pursue the Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) credential by passing the ASWB Bachelors exam. Not all states license at this level; check your state board.
College Scorecard data shows BSW-level social work graduates earn a median of $37,303 one year after graduation and $51,410 four years out, with median debt of $23,087.
Advanced standing lets BSW graduates from CSWE-accredited programs skip the generalist first year of an MSW and finish the master’s in about one year of full-time study.

Every school list on this site is ordered by the BOC Score, computed from the most recent school-level data published by the U.S. Department of Education (College Scorecard and IPEDS). To qualify, a school must be currently operating and accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Each eligible school is then scored on five measures, percentile-ranked against schools at the same credential level:
Schools without enough outcome data appear after ranked schools, without a score. Advertising never affects these rankings. Read the full methodology.

Most BSW programs follow the same structure because CSWE defines the competencies every accredited program must teach:
Online formats are often asynchronous for coursework, while field hours are completed in person at a local agency. To compare delivery options, see: Online Course Formats and Part-Time Programs. If you want to move faster, see: Accelerated Social Work Programs.

Field education is the part of an online BSW that cannot happen on a screen. Before enrolling, confirm:
Programs with dedicated field placement coordinators for online students are significantly easier to complete on schedule.
BSW graduates work in generalist, non-clinical roles:
| Role | Related BLS Occupation | Median Annual Wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Child welfare caseworker | Child, Family, and School Social Worker | $59,550 |
| Case manager / case aide | Social and Human Service Assistant | $45,930 |
| Community outreach worker | Community Health Worker | $51,850 |
| Program coordinator (with experience) | Social and Community Service Manager | $80,390 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2025. Note that social worker occupational categories include workers at multiple degree levels; clinical roles require an MSW and licensure.
In many states the BSW also qualifies you for the LBSW license (ASWB Bachelors exam), which some public agencies require for caseworker titles.
The strongest financial argument for the BSW over an adjacent major is advanced standing. A BSW graduate from a CSWE-accredited program can typically:
College Scorecard data shows why the MSW matters: master’s-level social work graduates earn a median $62,597 four years after graduation versus $51,410 for bachelor’s-level graduates. See: Online MSW Programs
Yes – with one condition: CSWE accreditation. State licensing boards evaluate whether the degree comes from a CSWE-accredited program, not whether courses were taken online or on campus. Diplomas and transcripts from accredited online BSW programs typically do not distinguish delivery format, and 506 of the 622 schools offering bachelor’s-level social work programs already deliver at least some of the program at a distance (College Scorecard).
Agency employers care most about three things you can build in an online program:
The practical quality differences among online BSW programs are field placement support, advising responsiveness, and cohort interaction – which is why those should anchor your comparison shopping rather than delivery format.
Requirements vary by school, but BSW programs commonly ask for:
