Is an Online Physics Degree Worth It? (2026)

The honest answer has two parts, and they pull in opposite directions.

Physics is excellent training. It teaches you to model an unfamiliar situation, estimate before you calculate, measure carefully, and know how uncertain your own answer is. Employers value that, and physics graduates do well in engineering, software, data, and instrumentation work. At the same time, physics is one of the least direct majors available: almost no job posting names it, the occupation that shares its name requires a doctorate, and the online version of the degree has a laboratory problem that other online degrees do not.

Whether it is worth it depends less on the field than on which of those two facts describes your situation.

What kinds of roles does a physics degree typically support?

Two distinct markets, and conflating them is the most common mistake.

The research market pays the most and asks for a doctorate. Physicists had a median annual wage of $172,250. The 10th percentile was $82,110 and the 90th was $274,110 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Employment was 24,600 in 2024, projected to grow 4.0 percent with about 1,700 annual openings (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Biochemists and biophysicists, at a median annual wage of $127,410 with 2,900 annual openings, are the nearest research neighbor. Entering either normally means a funded doctoral program of several years, frequently followed by a postdoctoral appointment.

The bachelor’s market is larger and differently shaped. Software developers had a median annual wage of $135,980 and are projected to grow 15.8 percent, turning over 115,200 openings a year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Engineers in the all-other category, where much applied physics work sits, had a median annual wage of $122,930 with 9,300 annual openings. Secondary school teachers had a median annual wage of $72,040 with 66,200 annual openings, and physics is a subject many districts cannot staff.

Does the online format change the answer?

For most majors, no. For physics, partly yes, and it is worth being direct about it.

The lecture and problem-solving core transfers well. Recorded derivations can be replayed, which some students find better than a single live pass. Homework and exams are the same. Computational physics is arguably better online, since everyone is working on their own machine anyway.

Laboratory work is the exception. Home kits and remote instruments cover introductory material adequately. Advanced laboratory, where you learn to align an optical bench, chase down a noise source, or characterize an instrument, is difficult to replicate at a distance, and it is exactly the experience a research-oriented graduate program wants to see. If your destination is a physics doctorate, an online-only path puts you at a disadvantage that you would need to offset with a summer research experience or a local research placement. If your destination is engineering, software, data, or teaching, that disadvantage largely disappears.

Do you need the degree, or the skills?

Sometimes only the skills, and that is worth checking before you enroll.

If the goal is software or data work, a computer science degree is the more direct route, and employers hire on demonstrated code either way. If the goal is designing and building systems, an ABET-accredited engineering degree is more directly credentialed, and some employers and licensure paths require it. If the goal is mathematical work, mathematics is the closer fit and the mathematician occupation is itself very small, with about 100 annual openings and -0.7 percent projected employment change (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034).

Physics earns its place when you want the underlying model rather than the applied specialty, when you are keeping a research career open, or when you want breadth across physical systems that a single engineering discipline does not give you.

How should you think about cost versus benefit?

The benefit side depends on what you add. A physics bachelor’s on its own is a strong signal with no obvious first job. The same degree with a programming portfolio, an internship, an engineering minor, or a teaching license converts quickly. Plan that addition from the first year rather than discovering it in the last.

Does degree level change the picture?

Substantially, more than in most fields.

The bachelor’s is quantitative training that opens applied work. It is a complete undergraduate credential and a common springboard into graduate programs in engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics as well as physics.

The master’s serves applied practice, teaching, and doctoral preparation. Physics teachers, postsecondary, had a median annual wage of $100,310 with 1,300 annual openings and 2.5 percent projected growth (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034), and most four-year faculty positions require a doctorate.

The doctorate is the research credential and the only route to the physicist title in practice. It is normally funded through assistantships. Choose it because you want to spend years on a research problem, not because the median wage is attractive.

  • Engineering is applied and credentialed. Choose it if you want to design and build, and if ABET accreditation or eventual licensure matters.
  • Electrical engineering overlaps heavily with applied physics in electronics, signals, and photonics, with a more direct hiring path.
  • Computer science is the shorter route to software work, which is the largest destination for physics graduates anyway.
  • Mathematics is the choice if abstraction and proof appeal more than experiment.
  • Chemistry shares the laboratory constraint and points toward materials, pharmaceuticals, and analytical work.
  • Education is the path if teaching physics is the goal, since the license, not the physics degree, is what a district requires.

Who might reconsider a physics degree?

  • Anyone who needs a named, direct career path within four years and does not want to add a second skill set
  • Students who dislike mathematics, since the degree is mathematics-intensive from the first term and does not become less so
  • Students whose only reason for choosing physics is the physicist wage figure, without intending a doctorate
  • Anyone who cannot travel for laboratory sessions and has not confirmed that a program can deliver every required lab remotely
  • Students planning a research career who would be enrolling in an online-only program with no path to hands-on research experience

How can you evaluate fit before enrolling?

  • Work through a chapter of a calculus-based introductory physics text and do the problems, not just the reading. Enjoyment of the problems is the best available predictor.
  • Write a short program that simulates something physical, such as projectile motion with drag. If that is satisfying, the computational half of the field will suit you.
  • Ask a program, in writing, how each required lab is delivered and when in-person sessions occur.
  • Ask what percentage of their online graduates continue to graduate school, and where.
  • Talk to someone doing the job you actually want and ask what credential their team hires on.

Is an online physics degree respected by employers?

A degree from an institution with recognized accreditation is respected, and the transcript does not say online. What employers actually evaluate is coursework, projects, and experience.
