Entry requirements differ sharply across these occupations. Logistician roles, at a median annual wage of $82,320 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), are commonly entered with a bachelor’s degree and sit at the boundary between operations and supply chain work. Transportation, storage, and distribution manager, at a median annual wage of $107,230 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), is a management-level role that generally expects prior experience in distribution or warehouse operations. Individual outcomes vary by employer, geography, and experience.
An operations management degree trains you to design, run, and improve the processes that turn inputs into a finished product or a delivered service. Core content covers process analysis, capacity and scheduling, quality management, inventory control, and the analytical methods used to decide how a process should be configured. Most programs sit inside a business school and pair that content with a general business core.
Operations management is inward-facing and supply chain management is outward-facing. Operations concerns the production and service processes the organization runs itself: line balancing, capacity, throughput, quality systems, and service delivery design. Supply chain management concerns the end-to-end network outside those walls: sourcing and supplier relationships, transportation, distribution networks, and the flow of goods from supplier to customer. The two overlap heavily at inventory and planning, and many programs are titled Operations and Supply Chain Management because schools teach them together. Both undergraduate and graduate levels are common. At the bachelor’s level the degree is usually a BSBA or BS with an operations management major or concentration, typically about 120 credits over four years full time. At the graduate level, options include an MS in Operations Management, an MS in Operations and Supply Chain Management, or an MBA with an operations concentration, typically 30 to 36 credits.

Because most programs sit inside a business school, AACSB or ACBSP accreditation of that school is a useful signal, but it accredits the school broadly rather than the operations program itself. Sometimes partially, never automatically. Lean and Six Sigma belt certifications and ASCM credentials such as CPIM are issued by training providers and professional bodies through their own exams and project requirements, not by universities. Operations curricula generally move through three layers.

Process capability, control charts, queueing behavior, and forecasting are all applied statistics wearing different clothes, and students who treat the statistics course as a hurdle to clear tend to struggle later.
The second layer is the operations core. Process analysis teaches you to map a process, measure cycle time and throughput, locate the bottleneck, and predict what happens when you change something upstream. Capacity planning and scheduling covers how much a system can produce, how to sequence work through it, and what utilization does to waiting time. Quality management covers statistical process control, process capability, root cause analysis, and the management systems built around them, including the lean and Six Sigma methods most programs teach as a structured improvement approach rather than as a certification course. Inventory management covers order quantities, safety stock, and the tradeoff between carrying cost and the cost of running out. Service operations extends all of it to settings where the product cannot be inventoried and the customer is inside the process – hospitals, call centers, restaurants, branch banking.
The third layer is analytical and applied. Operations analytics or management science teaches spreadsheet modeling, linear programming, simulation, and forecasting. Enterprise systems coursework introduces the ERP and planning software the work actually runs on. Project management coursework often appears here too, because improvement work is usually delivered as a project. Most programs finish with a capstone, simulation, or practicum that asks you to diagnose a real or simulated operation and defend a set of changes.
Programs vary in how quantitative they are. Some lean toward management, teamwork, and case discussion; others put real weight on modeling and statistics. Read the required course list before assuming the title tells you which you are getting.
Operations graduates usually start inside one process rather than over all of them: a production or manufacturing supervisor, a process or continuous improvement analyst, a quality analyst, a scheduler or planner, a branch or site operations coordinator, a business process analyst in a bank or insurer. The work is a mix of measuring what is actually happening, deciding what to change, and persuading people who do not report to you to change it. That last part is larger than newcomers expect, and it is why programs that require team projects and presentation work are not padding the curriculum.
The field’s titles rarely include the words “operations management,” and the same role can be called continuous improvement engineer at one employer and process analyst at another. Read the responsibilities rather than the title. Many employers also value professional certifications: lean and Six Sigma belts, and ASCM credentials such as CPIM for production and inventory work.
