A master’s in occupational safety and health serves two distinct groups, and it helps to know which one you are in before you compare programs. The first group already works in safety with a bachelor’s in the field and wants the degree for EHS management, corporate safety leadership, or deeper industrial hygiene practice toward the CIH. The second group holds a bachelor’s in something else – engineering, chemistry, nursing, construction management, the military – and is using the master’s as the entry point into the profession. Programs are built for one or the other, and occasionally both, and the required course list tells you which.
The degree title varies. MS in Occupational Safety and Health and MS in Safety Management are the common forms; MS in Environmental Health and Safety Management, MS in Occupational Health and Safety, MS in Safety Sciences, and MPH with an occupational or environmental health concentration all overlap heavily. It is a graduate program in the science and management of workplace hazard control, delivered through online coursework. Typical content includes advanced industrial hygiene, occupational epidemiology and toxicology, risk assessment, safety management systems, ergonomics, regulatory affairs, research methods, and a thesis or applied capstone. Management-titled programs weight the leadership and program-administration side; OSH-titled programs weight the science.
MS in Occupational Safety and Health and MS in Safety Management are the most common. Equivalent training appears as an MS in Environmental Health and Safety Management, MS in Occupational Health and Safety, MS in Safety Sciences, and MPH with an occupational or environmental health concentration. Compare required course lists rather than titles.
Typically 30 to 36 semester hours, commonly one to two years full-time and longer part-time. Most students in these programs work full time, often in operations roles with irregular hours, and two- to three-year part-time completion is normal and expected by the program. Programs that admit students without a safety background may add foundational coursework that extends the total.
People aiming at EHS manager or director roles, corporate or multi-site safety leadership, industrial hygiene practice at the CIH level, regulatory or consulting work, or teaching and research. Career changers with a non-safety bachelor’s also use it as their entry credential. If your goal is a specialist position and you already hold a safety bachelor’s, the bachelor’s plus the CSP is generally the more direct path.
Both, in different ways. For the CSP, a master’s does not change the exam but can count toward the experience requirement under BCSP’s rules, and a master’s from a BCSP Qualified Academic Program qualifies graduates for the Graduate Safety Practitioner designation. For the CIH, the Board for Global EHS Credentialing looks for specific science and industrial hygiene coursework, and a master’s with an industrial hygiene track is the most common way people satisfy it.
A completed bachelor’s degree, transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose are standard. Science-heavy programs may require prerequisite chemistry, biology, and statistics, or admit you conditionally with foundational courses added. Many are test-optional. Programs built for practitioners weigh professional safety experience heavily, and some ask for a letter from a supervisor.

Most programs organize around two or three tracks, and the choice between them is the most consequential decision after choosing the school.
Safety management or EHS management is the leadership track: program administration, auditing, metrics, regulatory strategy, budgeting, and organizational behavior. It is the natural choice for practitioners heading toward manager and director roles and aligns with the CSP.
Industrial hygiene is the exposure-science track: sampling and analytical chemistry, ventilation, noise and radiation, biological agents, and control design. It is the track to choose if you want the CIH, and it typically carries the heaviest prerequisite load. Some programs deliver it as a distinct MS in Industrial Hygiene rather than a track.
Occupational health, ergonomics, or construction safety appear as tracks at some schools, usually reflecting faculty strengths. An MPH with an occupational health concentration covers similar ground from the population-health side and suits students interested in research, government, or healthcare employers.

Requirements vary by school, but most programs require a completed bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Common elements include transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose. Programs with an industrial hygiene track usually require prior coursework in chemistry, biology, and mathematics or statistics, and will either require you to complete it before admission or admit you with foundational courses added to your plan.
Applicants without a safety background are welcome at many programs, and in fact make up a significant share of enrollment. Engineers moving into process safety, nurses moving into occupational health, construction managers formalizing a safety responsibility they already hold, and military veterans with safety and occupational health experience are all common. Programs built for practitioners often ask you to describe your current role and what you intend to do with the degree, and weigh that more heavily than undergraduate grades from years earlier. Ask admissions directly what they expect rather than inferring it from the catalog.
A bachelor’s is the credential that opens the field: it qualifies you for specialist-level hiring and satisfies the education requirement for the ASP and CSP. Occupational health and safety specialists earned a median annual wage of $90,150 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). A master’s is pursued to move into leadership, to qualify for the CIH, to enter the field from another discipline, or to compete for positions where a graduate degree is a stated preference. Safety directors and EHS managers are classified by the BLS under Managers, All Other, a broad category with a median annual wage of $141,900 (BLS OEWS, May 2025) – a figure that describes management-level work generally rather than safety management specifically, and one that is reached through years of experience with education functioning as one factor among several.
