For technician work, the honest answer is that you can enter the field without a bachelor’s and many people do. Trade workers, military veterans with safety experience, and operations employees who take on safety duties often move into technician and coordinator roles with a certificate or associate degree and employer training. What the degree changes is the ceiling: the specialist tier generally requires it, the ASP and CSP require it, and the CIH requires it plus specific science coursework.
For specialist and management work, the degree is not optional in practice. Employers list it as a minimum qualification, and the credentials that senior postings ask for cannot be earned without it. If that is your target, the question is not whether to get a degree but which one, from what kind of program, and how quickly.
There is also a consideration specific to this field. At the bachelor’s level, the credential does its real work. A bachelor’s in occupational safety and health or safety management meets the education requirement for specialist hiring and for the ASP and CSP, and a bachelor’s from a BCSP Qualified Academic Program lets you enter the CSP pathway as a Graduate Safety Practitioner without the ASP exam. If you are going to earn one safety credential, this is the one.
At the master’s level, the degree becomes an advancement and specialization credential – EHS management, corporate safety leadership, industrial hygiene at the CIH level, consulting, or teaching – and the entry credential for career changers who hold a bachelor’s in another field. Few entry-level specialist positions require it, and pursuing it before establishing yourself in the field usually front-loads cost against a benefit that arrives years later, unless the master’s is your route in.
