The bachelor’s is the working credential in occupational safety. It is the level at which employers stop hiring you to take samples and start hiring you to run the program, and it is the degree that the profession’s central credential, the Certified Safety Professional, is built on top of. Occupational health and safety specialists – the bachelor’s-level occupation – earned a median annual wage of $90,150 (BLS OEWS, May 2025), against $61,560 for the technicians who typically work under them (BLS OEWS, May 2025). That gap, and the credential eligibility that comes with the degree, is the practical argument for this page.
The degree goes by several names. BS in Occupational Safety and Health is the most direct; BS in Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, and Safety Sciences all describe substantially the same program, with the title signaling whether the school leans toward management or toward the science. Yes. Several accredited universities offer the full degree online, including some with ABET-ANSAC accreditation and some designated as BCSP Qualified Academic Programs. The lecture, analysis, and regulatory content is delivered asynchronously; laboratory and field components are handled through sampling kits, virtual labs, short residencies, or a supervised internship at a worksite near you. Ask how each school handles that part before enrolling.
Usually emphasis rather than substance. Programs titled safety management typically carry more coursework in program administration, training, risk management, and business, while programs titled occupational safety and health or occupational health and safety carry more industrial hygiene and applied science. Both prepare you for specialist roles and both can qualify for BCSP QAP status. Read the required course list rather than the title.
It is not required to work or to sit for BCSP credentials, but it matters. ABET’s Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission accredits safety programs against published curriculum criteria, and BCSP’s separate Qualified Academic Program designation lets graduates enter the CSP pathway as Graduate Safety Practitioners without taking the ASP exam. A program with either is signaling that its curriculum has been externally checked against the profession’s expectations.
Approximately 120 semester hours, typically four years full-time. The safety-specific core is generally an upper-division block of roughly 30 to 45 credits, with the remainder in general education, a science sequence, and electives. Programs that carry ABET accreditation tend to have a heavier required science component.
No. The CSP requires a bachelor’s degree, a period of professional safety experience, and holding a qualifying prior credential such as the ASP, followed by the examination. The bachelor’s satisfies the education requirement and, if the program is a BCSP QAP, lets you skip the ASP exam by holding the GSP designation. The experience still has to be earned on the job.
Yes, provided the institution is accredited. Employers in this field check for institutional accreditation, look for ABET or QAP status, and care a great deal about the credentials you earn afterward. Transcripts from accredited online programs do not indicate delivery format, and this is a profession with a large share of working adults who earned the degree while employed at a plant or on a site.

The direct route. These programs are built around the practice of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling hazards, and they generally carry the heaviest applied-science load of the bachelor’s options: chemistry and biology prerequisites, toxicology, industrial hygiene with a sampling and instrumentation component, and ergonomics taught as a measurement discipline. This is the pathway to choose if you might want the CIH later, because the Board for Global EHS Credentialing looks for science and industrial hygiene coursework in its eligibility review, and it is easier to have taken it than to add it afterward. It is also the pathway most likely to hold ABET-ANSAC accreditation.
The management-weighted version. The hazard-control core is still present, but the upper division tilts toward safety program administration, training design, risk management, workers’ compensation, and business coursework that prepares you to own a budget and a headcount. It suits students who already know they want the safety manager track and who are less interested in the exposure science. EHS-titled programs add environmental compliance – air, water, and waste regulation – to the occupational core, which matches how many manufacturers and energy companies actually structure the job. Beyond that, students sometimes reach safety work through a public health degree with an occupational or environmental health track, a construction management degree with safety electives, or an engineering degree followed by a graduate safety certificate. These routes work, but they may leave gaps against BCSP QAP or ABET criteria, so check the credential path before choosing one.

Unlike many degrees on this site, occupational safety has a real prerequisite chain. Chemistry, biology, and college algebra or statistics typically gate the industrial hygiene and toxicology sequence, and industrial hygiene often gates the upper-division applied courses. This is the question that separates good online safety programs from weak ones, and it deserves a direct conversation with admissions. Industrial hygiene is a hands-on discipline: you calibrate a pump, you place a dosimeter, you read a sound level meter, you set up a sampling train. Online programs address this through some mix of mailed sampling kits with instruments you return, virtual laboratory simulations, one or more short on-campus residencies, and a supervised worksite internship where you perform the work under a practicing professional. Any of these can be adequate. What you want to avoid is a program that simply omits the practical component, because the CIH eligibility review and, more immediately, your first employer will notice.
Transfer credit can substantially shorten a bachelor’s, particularly for general education and the science prerequisites. Many safety students arrive with an associate degree in occupational safety, fire science, or a technical trade, and some arrive with years of industry experience and a stack of OSHA Outreach cards. Verify that the institution holds accreditation from a recognized institutional accreditor – such as HLC or SACSCOC – through the U.S. Department of Education database. Then check two things specific to this field: whether the program holds ABET accreditation through the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission, and whether it appears on BCSP’s list of Qualified Academic Programs.
A bachelor’s is the entry credential for specialist-level work and the foundation of the CSP pathway. A master’s in occupational safety is generally pursued later, by people already in the field who are aiming at EHS management, corporate safety leadership, industrial hygiene practice at the CIH level, or research and teaching. Very few entry-level specialist positions require one. If you already hold a bachelor’s in a different field, a graduate certificate or a master’s is usually a more efficient route into safety than a second bachelor’s.
