Occupational health and safety technicians, at a median annual wage of $61,560 (BLS OEWS, May 2025), collect samples, test equipment, and conduct routine inspections under a specialist’s direction; the role is often entered with an associate degree or a certificate plus on-the-job training, with employment projected to grow 8.5 percent and about 3,400 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-34). Two adjacent occupations also draw on the degree. All are practitioner credentials, not degrees. The ASP and CSP, administered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, are the general safety-practice credentials; the ASP is the associate step and the CSP is the full professional credential, each requiring a combination of degree, professional experience, and an examination. The OHST is BCSP’s technician-level credential with lighter education requirements. Yes. ABET accredits safety, occupational health, and related programs through its Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission (ANSAC), and a number of bachelor’s and master’s programs hold it. Separately, BCSP designates Qualified Academic Programs (QAPs); graduates of a QAP can apply for the Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) designation, which lets them enter the CSP pathway without sitting the ASP examination. Neither is universal, and a good program can hold neither, but both are meaningful quality signals. Always verify institutional accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education database regardless.
Most of it, yes. Regulation, management systems, hazard analysis, investigation, and the science foundations are lecture-and-analysis content that translates directly. The parts to ask about are laboratory components – industrial hygiene sampling, instrument calibration, ergonomic assessment – which online programs handle through take-home kits, virtual labs, short residencies, or a supervised internship at a real worksite. Ask each school specifically how it delivers the lab and field components before you enroll.
Occupational safety curricula are built in three layers, and the proportions between them are what distinguish one program from another.
The first layer is science. You cannot evaluate an exposure without chemistry, biology, and enough physics to understand noise, radiation, and ventilation, so bachelor’s programs front-load these, and stronger programs require a statistics course early because exposure assessment is fundamentally a sampling problem. Anatomy and physiology, toxicology, and epidemiology follow, because the point of the field is what hazards do to bodies over time, and industrial hygiene draws all of it together into the practice of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling chemical, physical, and biological agents. Programs that carry ABET-ANSAC accreditation are generally heavier here, and programs preparing students for the CIH are heavier still.
The second layer is applied safety practice, and it is the core of the degree. Industrial safety covers machine guarding, lockout/tagout, electrical hazards, confined spaces, powered industrial trucks, and the standards that govern each. Construction safety covers fall protection, excavation, scaffolding, cranes, and the multi-employer worksite rules that make construction its own regulatory world. Fire protection, ergonomics and human factors, hazardous materials, emergency response, and occupational health round it out. The teaching method in this layer is the case: a real incident, the sequence of failures behind it, the standard that was violated or that did not exist, and the control hierarchy that would have prevented it. By the time you finish you should be able to walk a facility you have never seen and produce a defensible hazard inventory.
The third layer is management and regulation. OSHA standards and recordkeeping, workers’ compensation, the legal exposure an employer carries, and increasingly the consensus-standard management systems – ANSI/ASSP Z10, ISO 45001 – that large employers organize their programs around. Safety program management, training design, incident investigation and root cause analysis, risk assessment, and safety culture and leadership fill out the block. The soft version of this content is a list of principles; the good version teaches you to make a business case for a control, because the safety professional’s real job is convincing people with budgets. Bachelor’s programs generally run about 120 credits with the safety-specific content concentrated in the upper division; master’s programs are usually in the 30 to 36 credit range and lean toward the management, research, and industrial hygiene layers.
The work sorts into a clear ladder. Technician roles – safety technician, industrial hygiene technician, safety coordinator – carry out sampling, inspections, training delivery, and documentation under a specialist’s direction, and are the usual landing spot for associate and certificate holders. Specialist roles – safety specialist, EHS specialist, industrial hygienist, loss control consultant, OSHA compliance officer – own the program: they design it, audit it, investigate what goes wrong in it, and answer for it. These are bachelor’s-level positions and the bulk of the profession. Management roles – safety manager, EHS manager, corporate safety director, regional loss control manager – sit over specialists, own the budget, and report to operations or executive leadership; they are reached through experience, and usually through a CSP or CIH, with a master’s increasingly common at the director level.
Where you work shapes the job as much as your title. Manufacturing safety is process-driven and lives in the machine-guarding and chemical-exposure standards. Construction safety moves site to site and turns on fall protection, subcontractor management, and the daily reality that the workforce changes every week. Oil and gas, utilities, and mining carry their own regulators and their own catastrophic-hazard focus. Logistics and warehousing is forklifts, ergonomics, and heat. Government work means inspection and enforcement for OSHA, a state plan, or MSHA. Insurance loss control is the field’s consulting arm: surveying policyholders’ operations, recommending controls, and feeding underwriting – a good fit for people who want variety and travel rather than one plant.
