Graduate neuroscience runs on two tracks that are easy to confuse and very different in practice. The MS in Neuroscience is a one-to-two-year coursework degree, sometimes with a thesis, often built for people who want stronger research credentials before applying to a doctorate, or who want to work in industry, science communication, or teaching. The PhD in Neuroscience is a research apprenticeship of roughly five to six years that ends with an original dissertation, and it is the degree that produces independent researchers.
That distinction drives everything on this page. If your goal is to run your own studies, publish as a principal investigator, or hold a faculty research position, the PhD is the path, and PhD programs in neuroscience are laboratory-based and almost always residential. If your goal is a credential that deepens the science without five years at the bench, the MS is a real and useful degree, and more of it can be delivered online.

Online neuroscience offerings are concentrated at the bachelor’s level, so the listing may surface degrees in biology, psychology, health science, and related fields rather than a graduate neuroscience specialty. That is worth knowing before you start comparing.
It is a graduate degree that builds advanced coursework in cellular, systems, cognitive, or clinical neuroscience on top of a bachelor’s in a science field. Programs come in thesis and non-thesis versions. Thesis tracks require an original research project with a faculty advisor. Non-thesis tracks substitute additional coursework, a comprehensive examination, or a capstone literature project.
If your undergraduate record and research experience are already competitive, apply directly to the PhD. Doctoral programs in the biomedical sciences typically fund admitted students, and a master’s completed first rarely shortens the doctorate. The master’s earns its place when you are changing fields, when your undergraduate grades or research hours need rebuilding, or when you want a terminal credential for industry or teaching rather than a research career.
Some coursework-based MS and certificate programs are delivered online or in a hybrid format, particularly in cognitive, clinical, and applied neuroscience where the methods are computational or observational rather than bench-based. Thesis tracks and any program built around wet-lab research require in-person laboratory time. Ask each program which track it offers online and how the research requirement is satisfied.
The MS is coursework with an optional research project, paid for by the student, finished in one to two years. The PhD is a research apprenticeship of about five to six years, usually funded through a stipend and a tuition waiver in exchange for research and teaching work, ending in an original dissertation. Only the PhD is treated as the credential for independent research positions.
Usually not. Programs commonly admit from biology, psychology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, computer science, and other quantitative fields. What they check is prerequisite coverage: introductory biology and chemistry, often organic chemistry or biochemistry, statistics, and prior research experience. Missing prerequisites can usually be completed before matriculation.

Choose the PhD if you want to design and lead research. It is the recognized credential for principal investigator roles in universities, hospitals, government laboratories, and industry research divisions. It is also a long commitment with an opportunity cost measured in years of full-time earnings, and the academic job market in the biological sciences is competitive. Biological science teachers, postsecondary, an occupation that requires a doctorate at the university level, had a median annual wage of $84,620 with projected growth of 7.3 percent from 2024 to 2034 and about 5,400 openings per year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034).
Choose the MS if you need a bridge or a terminal credential. A thesis MS with a publication changes a weak doctoral application more than another year of technician work does. A non-thesis MS suits people moving into clinical research operations, regulatory affairs, science communication, or teaching. It is not a shortcut to a research career, and no program should imply that it is.
Do not treat an MS as a smaller PhD. Hiring managers in research settings do not. Ask each program directly where its graduates went in the last three cohorts, and treat a program that cannot answer as a program that does not track it.

Requirements vary, but most programs ask for a completed bachelor’s degree, transcripts showing prerequisite science coursework, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and a resume or CV. Research experience is weighted heavily, especially for thesis tracks and for any program that feeds a doctorate. Standardized test scores have become optional at many programs; ask rather than assume.
The statement of purpose is read differently in the sciences than in other fields. Committees look for a specific research question and named faculty whose work matches it. A statement about a general fascination with the brain is a weaker application than one that identifies a laboratory and explains why.
If you are applying from psychology or another non-laboratory background, expect to document the chemistry and statistics coursework directly. If you are applying from biology or chemistry, the prerequisite question usually resolves itself and the research experience becomes the deciding factor.
An online bachelor’s in neuroscience is the undergraduate science credential that qualifies you for laboratory and clinical-research support roles and for graduate admission. Graduate study is where the field narrows to a subfield and a set of methods. Neither level licenses you for anything, since neuroscience is not a licensed profession. The clinical careers adjacent to it are licensed, and each has its own professional degree.
