The occupations below are the ones most commonly reached through neuroscience coursework, but they are not reached equally: several require a doctorate, and one requires a professional degree and a state license. Employment was 165,300 in 2024, projected to grow 8.7 percent through 2034, with about 9,600 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Entry to that occupation normally requires a PhD or an MD. Biochemists and biophysicists overlap heavily with molecular neuroscience: a median annual wage of $127,410, a 10th percentile of $74,290, a 90th percentile of $201,110, employment of 35,600 in 2024, projected growth of 5.8 percent, and roughly 2,900 openings per year. Biological technicians is the occupation most reachable with a bachelor’s degree alone: a median annual wage of $57,510, a 10th percentile of $40,330, a 90th percentile of $84,940, employment of 82,700, projected growth of 3.5 percent, and about 9,100 openings per year. Clinical and counseling psychologists, at a median of $100,580, is a licensed doctoral path that behavioral neuroscience coursework prepares you to apply for, not one the bachelor’s degree itself opens. Individual outcomes vary by employer, geography, specialization, and experience.
A neuroscience degree is an interdisciplinary science major built around the nervous system. Coursework spans molecular and cellular neuroscience, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, sensory and motor systems, cognition, behavior, and the statistics and research methods used to study all of it. Most programs also require general and organic chemistry, biology with laboratory work, and calculus or biostatistics, which is why the major is closer to biology in workload than to psychology.
Partly. Lecture-based neuroscience courses, cognitive and behavioral coursework, statistics, and research-methods sequences transfer well to online delivery. Wet-lab courses do not. No. There is no recognized programmatic accreditor for neuroscience degrees. Verify that the institution holds accreditation from a recognized institutional accreditor through the U.S. Department of Education database. Related fields do have programmatic accreditation – pharmacy programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, and doctoral programs in clinical psychology by the American Psychological Association – but that applies to those degrees, not to a neuroscience major.
In IPEDS 2024, 337 institutions reported bachelor’s-or-higher completions in the neuroscience and neurobiology fields of study, and 250 of those institutions reported offering distance-education programs (IPEDS 2024). Reporting a distance program at the institution level does not mean the neuroscience degree specifically is available online, which is why you have to confirm delivery format program by program.
Neuroscience curricula tend to move through four layers, and the first one surprises students who arrived through a psychology course.
The foundation is general science. General biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and often physics, each with laboratory sections, plus calculus or biostatistics. This block is where online neuroscience programs are most constrained, because these are the courses with wet labs. Programs solve it with on-campus intensives, approved local laboratory placements, or vendor lab kits. A program that never explains how you will complete organic chemistry laboratory is a program to ask hard questions of.
The second layer is core neuroscience. Cellular and molecular neuroscience covers membrane potentials, ion channels, synaptic transmission, and neurotransmitter systems. Neuroanatomy maps the structures and pathways. Systems neuroscience takes on vision, hearing, motor control, and homeostasis. These courses teach well online when the program invests in good imaging resources and problem sets.
The third layer is the behavioral and cognitive side: learning and memory, cognitive neuroscience, sensation and perception, psychopharmacology, developmental neuroscience, and often a neurological and psychiatric disorders course. This is where neuroscience overlaps behavioral health science and psychology, and where many students find the questions that pull them into the major.
The fourth layer is methods and evidence. Research design, biostatistics, reading primary literature, and increasingly programming in Python or R for data analysis. Programs cap the sequence with a capstone, a literature thesis, or an independent research experience. That last item matters more than any grade if graduate school is the plan, because doctoral admissions committees read for research experience first.

Several adjacent careers are professional rather than research paths, and neuroscience is preparation rather than qualification. Medicine, physician assistant practice, and pharmacy all take neuroscience majors and all require their own professional degree and licensure. Clinical and counseling psychologists require a doctorate plus state licensure. If clinical work with patients is the goal, plan the professional degree from the start rather than expecting the bachelor’s to lead there.

Choose psychology if behavior and mental processes interest you more than cells and circuits, or behavioral health science if you want a service-oriented path toward counseling and community health.
