Online mobile app development degrees use the same asynchronous, synchronous, and hybrid formats as other online programs, but two things make the format decision matter more here. The coursework is cumulative and hands-on, so falling behind is hard to recover from. And it depends on a working development environment – which means you need to know what hardware the program expects, what it provides, and who helps you when your build fails at eleven at night.

Mobile programs commonly use asynchronous, synchronous, or hybrid formats. The format mainly changes scheduling and interaction, not the core academic content.
Asynchronous courses let you access lectures and materials on your own schedule within a defined timeframe. They typically still use weekly deadlines for coding assignments, code submissions, and discussion posts.
Expect Xcode with Swift for iOS, Android Studio with Kotlin for Android, or a cross-platform toolkit such as React Native or Flutter. Git is standard for assignments and group work. Hardware matters more than in most fields: Xcode runs only on macOS, and emulators and IDEs need a reasonably capable machine.
For iOS coursework, effectively yes – Xcode is macOS-only. Some schools provide remote or virtual Mac access or lend hardware; others expect you to supply it. Ask before enrolling. Android and most cross-platform development run fine on Windows or Linux.
For most coursework a simulator or emulator is sufficient, and your own phone covers the rest. Some courses require testing on a physical device because certain behavior – camera, sensors, real network conditions, performance – does not reproduce faithfully in a simulator. Ask what the requirement is at each level.
Time commitment varies by course load and school, but mobile coursework combines reading with coding work whose duration is hard to predict. A build problem can absorb hours that a reading assignment would not. Ask each school for a sample weekly schedule.

Asynchronous courses let students access lectures and materials on their own schedule within a defined timeframe.
This is the most common format in online mobile programs and generally the one working students prefer. Development work is naturally solitary, which suits the format. The tradeoff shows up when you are stuck on something environmental rather than conceptual – a dependency conflict, a signing error, an emulator that will not launch – and help arrives on office-hours or forum time rather than immediately.
Synchronous courses are built around scheduled live sessions students attend online.
This format suits students who benefit from watching an experienced developer work – including how they read an error message, isolate a failure, and back out of a wrong approach. That process is difficult to convey in a polished recorded lecture where everything works the first time.
Hybrid formats combine asynchronous coursework with periodic live sessions.
Code review sessions are worth looking for specifically. Reading and critiquing other people’s code is a core professional skill, and it is one of the few things that genuinely benefits from being live.
Mobile coursework is hands-on, and the environment is part of the curriculum. Expect some combination of:

Mobile coursework distributes unevenly across a week in a way that catches people off guard. A reading assignment takes the time you budget. A coding assignment where the SDK version does not match the tutorial takes as long as it takes. The format determines how much slack you have when that happens.

Online mobile development students typically have access to academic and technical support, though quality varies more than availability.
Availability and hours vary by institution. Ask whether support hours cover the evenings and weekends you will actually be working, since that is when most coding gets done.
A good format choice depends on your schedule, your programming background, and how you handle being stuck.
