A master’s degree titled “mobile app development” is rare, and it is worth being direct about why. Mobile development is primarily a craft skill learned through building, and the industry hires on demonstrated work more than on graduate credentials. Where mobile appears at the master’s level, it is almost always a specialization, track, or elective cluster inside an MS in Computer Science, MS in Software Engineering, or a professional MS in Information Technology.
That does not make the degree pointless – it changes what it is for. People pursue a master’s with a mobile emphasis to change careers into software from another field, to add the architecture and engineering-management depth that senior and lead roles ask for, to meet a degree requirement for advancement at an employer, or because an international visa or credentialing situation calls for it. It is generally not the fastest route into a first mobile developer job; a bachelor’s plus a portfolio usually is.

Requirements vary by school, but most programs require a completed bachelor’s degree. Common elements include transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose. Programs in computing also typically want evidence that you can program – prior coursework in programming and data structures, professional experience, or in some cases a portfolio or public repository.
Applicants coming from outside computing are not automatically excluded. Many programs are explicitly designed for career changers and admit them with a required bridge sequence, conditional status, or a recommendation to complete prerequisite coursework first. Ask admissions directly what they expect rather than inferring it from the catalog, and ask how long the bridge sequence adds to the timeline.
A bachelor’s pathway – typically a software development, computer science, or information technology major with mobile coursework – is the standard entry point into mobile developer roles, and for most people aiming at a first job it is the more efficient choice. A master’s is more commonly pursued to pivot into software from another field, to reach architecture and technical leadership roles, or to satisfy an employer or credentialing requirement.
