Online Bachelor's in Mobile App Development: 2026 Programs

A standalone bachelor’s degree titled “mobile app development” is uncommon. At the undergraduate level, mobile development is usually taught as a concentration, minor, or elective sequence inside a broader major – most often software development, computer science, or information technology. That is not a downgrade, and it is worth understanding why: mobile development sits on top of programming, data structures, networking, and databases, and a four-year major is built to deliver those. The mobile specialization typically lands in the junior and senior years once the foundation is in place.

The other reason schools structure it this way is durability. Platform SDKs change every year, and a degree built entirely around this year’s toolkit ages badly. A major that teaches the underlying software engineering and adds mobile on top produces graduates who can move to the next framework.

The three main undergraduate pathways

Software development or software engineering with a mobile concentration

This is the most direct route. The major is built around designing, building, testing, and maintaining software, and mobile courses slot in as upper-division concentration requirements. You get version control, testing, agile practice, and API work as core content rather than as electives, which is exactly the surrounding skill set a mobile job assumes. The thing to verify is that the mobile courses are reliably offered online in the terms you need them, rather than listed in the catalog and taught only on campus.

Computer science with mobile electives

A computer science major delivers algorithms, data structures, systems, databases, and the mathematics behind them, then offers mobile development as upper-division electives. The advantage is portability: if you decide mobile is not what you want, the degree supports backend, systems, data, or machine learning work equally well. The tradeoff is that you spend semesters on theory that a mobile job will not ask you about directly, and you may need to build your mobile portfolio partly on your own time. Information technology with an application development track

An information technology major covers networks, systems administration, security, and databases alongside application development. This suits students who want breadth across the technology function rather than depth in one specialty, and it is a common route for people already working in an IT role who want to move toward development.   • How often the upper-division mobile electives are offered online, and in which terms
  • Which platform each course actually teaches, and in which language – catalog descriptions are often years out of date
  • Whether the capstone requires a prerequisite chain you can realistically finish on your timeline

Transfer credits and degree planning

Transfer credit can substantially shorten a bachelor’s, particularly for general education and the introductory programming sequence. Rules vary by institution, so confirm:

  • The maximum number of transfer credits accepted
  • The minimum grade required for a course to transfer
  • Whether credits apply to the major core or only to general electives – introductory programming often transfers, upper-division platform courses often do not
  • Whether an existing associate degree or industry certificate in mobile or web development carries any credit
  • Residency requirements, meaning a minimum number of credits completed at the institution

Accreditation and program quality checks

There is no programmatic accreditor for mobile app development degrees or concentrations. Verify that the institution holds accreditation from a recognized institutional accreditor – such as HLC or SACSCOC – through the U.S. Department of Education database.

If your pathway is a computer science major, the department may hold ABET computing accreditation for the CS degree. That is a meaningful additional signal about the computer science program, but it does not evaluate a mobile development concentration specifically – no accreditor does. Platform certifications from Apple or Google are vendor credentials, not accreditation, and a degree does not confer them.

Bachelor’s vs other credential levels

Below the bachelor’s, certificates and associate degrees in mobile development exist and are more likely to carry the words “mobile app development” in the title. They get you building sooner and cost less, but they cover less of the surrounding software engineering, and some employers screen on the bachelor’s. Above it, a master’s in computer science or software engineering with a mobile specialization is usually pursued for career change or advancement rather than for entry into mobile development itself.
