Affordable online mathematics programs are less about finding the lowest advertised rate and more about lowering your total cost to complete the degree. The levers that actually move the number are the per-credit price you pay, how many credits you pay it on, and which fees get added afterward. Mathematics has one cost advantage over most majors and one cost risk. The advantage is transfer credit: the calculus sequence is standardized and inexpensive to complete elsewhere. The risk is time enrolled, because a sequential major with thin course rotations can add terms you did not budget for.
The largest levers are in-state or flat online tuition rates, transferring in prior college credit, and credit-by-exam options such as CLEP or AP for calculus and general education. Reducing the number of credits you take at full price has more effect than chasing a single low advertised rate.
Many public universities charge a flat online tuition rate regardless of state residency, but not all do. Some still apply out-of-state rates to online students living outside the state. Confirm the specific policy with each school before enrolling.
Calculus I through III, linear algebra, and differential equations transfer more readily than anything else in the major, because the content is standardized and community colleges teach them at scale. Upper-division proof courses – real analysis, abstract algebra – often carry residency restrictions and may not transfer at all. Ask before you take one elsewhere.
Mathematics programs commonly bill technology fees and, distinctively, proctoring charges, because examinations in this field are proctored more often than in most majors. Some courses require a specific graphing or computer algebra tool. Ask each school for an itemized fee schedule at your degree level.

Many public universities set a single online tuition rate for all students regardless of home state, which can be substantially lower than an out-of-state campus rate. Some schools still distinguish between in-state and out-of-state online tuition, so confirm the specific policy before applying. This is the biggest lever in mathematics, and it is bigger here than in most majors. The first two years of the degree are general education plus the calculus sequence and linear algebra, and all of it is widely available at community colleges and through standardized examinations. Ask each school:
Placement deserves its own attention. If you have not taken calculus in several years, a placement exam that puts you into Calculus II saves a course, but only if you can actually keep up. The cheapest credit is one you do not repeat.

The comparison that matters is per-credit rate multiplied by total required credits, plus fees across the whole program. Ask each school to confirm total required credits in writing alongside the rate. At the master’s level, credit totals vary widely between thesis and examination tracks, and that difference can outweigh a modest rate difference.
This is the cost factor most specific to mathematics. The major is sequential, and if a required upper-division course runs once a year, missing it by one term adds a full year of enrollment. That is a real cost even at a low rate. Before you enroll, ask for the two-year rotation of upper-division courses and check that your plan works against it. Finishing coursework faster through an accelerated format does not usually reduce the rate, but it can reduce total cost by shortening how long you are enrolled – provided the rotation cooperates.

At the master’s level the comparison shifts. Credit totals vary by track, thesis and examination routes differ in length, and community college teaching eligibility depends on a graduate mathematics credit count rather than on the cheapest path to the diploma. Weigh cost against a specific use of the degree rather than against the field in general. Actuarial work requires a professional exam sequence, secondary teaching requires a state license, and research roles require graduate study. Mathematics has a higher repeat rate than most majors, and a repeated course is the most expensive credit you will ever buy. You pay for it twice, you lose the term, and because the major is sequential, a failed prerequisite can push every course behind it back by a full rotation cycle.

Ask each school one more question while you are comparing rates: what is the pass rate in the transition-to-proof course for online students. Not every school will answer. The ones that do are telling you something useful about both the course and the support around it, and a program with strong support at a slightly higher rate is often the cheaper degree in total.
