An online master’s in management information systems is built for two distinct groups, and knowing which one you are in determines which program fits. The first is people already working in IT who want the business, project, and management layer that moves them from doing the work to directing it. The second is people from accounting, operations, healthcare, marketing, or another functional field who want to move into systems and analytics work and need the technical foundation the degree supplies. Programs weight those two audiences differently, and the prerequisite policy is usually where you can tell which one a school is built for.
Common titles include MS in Information Systems, MS in Management Information Systems, MSIS, and Master of Information Systems Management. Business schools also offer an MBA with an information systems concentration, which is a genuinely different degree; that comparison is below.
It is a graduate business-school program that builds advanced capability in data management, systems analysis and architecture, enterprise systems, IT governance, and technology project and portfolio management, delivered through online coursework. It is aimed at the management and design of information systems rather than at software engineering.
MS in Information Systems, MS in Management Information Systems, MSIS, and Master of Information Systems Management are the usual titles. Some schools deliver similar content as an MBA concentration or as an MS in Business Analytics with a systems track. Compare required course lists rather than titles.
Typically 30 to 36 semester hours, commonly one to two years full-time and longer part-time. Programs built for working professionals frequently run two to three years at a reduced course load, and many use shorter terms to keep momentum.
It varies more than in most fields, precisely because the applicant pool is mixed. Some programs assume an MIS or computing background and start at an advanced level. Others are explicitly designed as career-change programs and include a foundation sequence covering programming, databases, and business fundamentals. Ask directly which model a program follows.
Usually not. Many MSIS programs admit applicants from non-technical majors and bridge the gap with foundation coursework. What they generally do expect is comfort with quantitative work and a clear reason for the pivot. Programs differ on whether foundation courses count toward the degree total or add credits on top.
An MSIS is a specialist degree: most of the coursework is information systems, and you go deep on data, architecture, and systems management. An MBA with an IT concentration is a general management degree with a few systems electives, and it goes deeper on strategy, leadership, and finance. Choose MSIS to become the technology leader; choose the MBA to become the general manager who is comfortable with technology.

Most programs require a completed bachelor’s degree, transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose. Letters of recommendation are common. GMAT or GRE scores are still requested by some business schools, though many online programs are test-optional or waive the requirement for applicants with substantial work experience.
Work experience matters more here than in most technical master’s programs. MIS coursework leans on organizational examples, and programs built for working professionals often expect two or more years of experience because the class discussion depends on it. Applicants coming from non-technical backgrounds are routinely admitted, sometimes with a required foundation sequence in programming, databases, or business fundamentals. Ask admissions directly what they expect rather than inferring it from the catalog.
A bachelor’s in MIS is a complete entry credential and the standard route into analyst roles. The master’s is generally pursued for one of three reasons: to pivot into systems work from another field, to reach architecture and senior consulting roles that expect graduate training, or to move from technical work into technology management. If you already hold an MIS bachelor’s and are early in your career, experience often does more for the next role than a second degree in the same subject – which is a reason to be specific about what you want the master’s to change.
