Instructional design does not have its own federal occupation code. Graduates are counted under several codes depending on who employs them: instructional coordinators in schools and districts, training and development specialists in companies, and educational instruction and library workers, all other, in the settings that fit nowhere else. Employment was 232,600 in 2024, projected to change 1.3 percent through 2034, with 21,900 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). That is the code most K-12 and higher-education curriculum work falls under, and in public schools it usually carries licensure requirements that have nothing to do with the design skills themselves.
Training and development specialists had a median annual wage of $69,280 with the 10th percentile at $38,760 and the 90th at $123,250 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Employment was 452,300 in 2024, projected to grow 10.8 percent through 2034, with 43,900 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). This is the largest and fastest-growing of the associated codes, and it is where most corporate instructional designers are counted.

Employment was 46,400 in 2024, projected to grow 5.8 percent through 2034, with 3,800 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). It is a supervisory role reached after design experience, not an entry point.
Individual outcomes vary by employer, sector, geography, and portfolio. Corporate and higher-education instructional design pay differently for the same work.
It is a graduate degree in designing instruction: analyzing a performance problem, writing objectives that can be measured, choosing a delivery format, building the course or module, and evaluating whether it worked. Common titles are Instructional Design and Technology, Learning Design and Technology, and Educational Technology. Programs are typically 30 to 36 credits and end in a portfolio.
Not universally, but it is the common entry credential and the one most postings list. Corporate teams hire on portfolio more readily than on the diploma. K-12 curriculum roles are stricter: instructional coordinator positions in public schools frequently require a master’s plus a teaching license and, in many states, a curriculum-supervisor endorsement. Check your state’s rules before assuming the degree alone qualifies you.
Rarely under that exact title. Undergraduate options are usually an educational technology concentration inside an education degree, or a related major such as communication, psychology, or design. ADDIE stands for analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. It is a process framework, not a theory, and most teams use a modified or iterative version rather than a strict waterfall. Employers expect you to know it and to be able to explain when you would work in shorter cycles instead. Successive approximation and other agile variants are common in corporate settings.
No. There is no recognized programmatic accreditor for instructional design or educational technology degrees. CAEP accredits educator preparation programs, so it is relevant only if your program leads to a K-12 teaching license or a curriculum endorsement. Otherwise, verify institutional accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education database.
Instructional design curricula generally move through four layers, and the first one is the layer beginners skip.
The first layer is analysis. Before anything is built, you establish what learners can already do, what they need to do, and whether instruction is even the right intervention. A large share of workplace “training requests” are process, tooling, or incentive problems that no course will fix. Coursework covers needs assessment, task and content analysis, audience analysis, and writing objectives that name an observable behavior and the conditions for it.
The second layer is learning theory applied to design. Cognitive load theory, multimedia learning principles, behaviorist and constructivist traditions, motivation models, and how retrieval practice and spacing affect retention. This is the part that separates an instructional designer from a course producer. It gives you a defensible reason for every design decision, which matters when a subject-matter expert wants forty slides of narration.
The third layer is production. Storyboarding, scripting, authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline and Rise or Adobe Captivate, video and audio editing, graphic and interface basics, accessibility to WCAG standards, and packaging for a learning management system with SCORM or xAPI. Programs vary enormously here. Some teach production deeply, some assume you will learn tools on your own.
The fourth layer is evaluation and the capstone. Formative testing with real users, assessment design and item writing, and summative evaluation models such as Kirkpatrick’s four levels or Brinkerhoff’s success case method. The capstone is usually a portfolio project built for a real or simulated client, and it is the artifact that gets you hired. The work splits by employer, and the sectors want different things.
Corporate learning and development is the largest market. Titles include instructional designer, learning experience designer, curriculum developer, and learning solutions consultant. The work is compliance training, onboarding, sales and product enablement, and leadership development. Most of these roles are counted as training and development specialists, projected to grow 10.8 percent from 2024 to 2034 (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Overlap with human resources is real, and some designers report into HR.
Higher education employs instructional designers in centers for teaching and learning and in online program units, partnering with faculty to build and revise courses.
