Innovation graduates work in corporate strategy and product groups, consulting firms, technology companies, hospital systems, universities and research institutes, economic development agencies, and their own ventures. There is no single occupation called “innovation,” which is part of why this degree needs careful evaluation – graduates enter established management and analyst occupations rather than a labeled career track. The occupations below are the ones most commonly associated with innovation coursework. Entry requirements differ across these occupations. General and operations manager roles, which had a median annual wage of $105,770 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), are broad and usually reached through prior operating experience rather than directly from a degree. Management analyst roles, at a median annual wage of $101,860 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), are the most common consulting-side landing spot and are frequently entered with a bachelor’s plus analytical experience or with a master’s. Marketing manager roles, at a median annual wage of $166,790 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), overlap with innovation work on the product-launch and go-to-market side. Computer and information systems manager roles, at a median annual wage of $175,140 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), are where innovation work sits in technology organizations and typically expect a technical background alongside management training. Individual outcomes vary by employer, geography, and experience.
An innovation degree trains you to find, test, and commercialize new products, services, and business models, and to manage the organizational conditions that let new work survive. At the bachelor’s level it is usually a concentration – most often “Innovation & Entrepreneurship” – inside a business administration or management major. At the master’s level it exists as a standalone title, including MS in Innovation, MS in Innovation Management, and innovation tracks inside an MBA.

What distinguishes them is the interdisciplinary layer borrowed from design and engineering: user research, prototyping, and product development method. Verify that the institution holds accreditation from a recognized institutional accreditor such as HLC or SACSCOC through the U.S. Department of Education database. If the program is housed in a business school, that school may hold AACSB, ACBSP, or IACBE business accreditation, which is a meaningful additional signal about the business school as a whole – see AACSB accreditation for what that involves.
Innovation curricula generally move through three layers, and programs differ most in how seriously they take the first one.
The first layer is discovery. This is the research work of establishing that a problem exists and that someone will pay to have it solved – customer interviews, observation, jobs-to-be-done analysis, market sizing, and competitive landscape. Programs that skip straight to ideation produce students who are good at generating concepts and bad at telling which ones are real. The discipline in this field is mostly in the killing of ideas, not the having of them.
The second layer is development. Design thinking gives the method structure: framing, ideation, prototyping, and testing in short loops. New product development covers stage-gate processes, requirements, and the handoffs between design, engineering, and marketing. Business model design covers revenue models, unit economics, and financial modeling under genuine uncertainty, where you are forecasting a market that does not yet exist. Technology commercialization and intellectual property cover licensing, patents, and how research moves out of a lab and into a product.
The third layer is organizational. This is what separates innovation from entrepreneurship as a subject, and it is the part working professionals usually find most immediately useful. It covers portfolio management and how firms allocate capital across incremental and risky bets, stage-gate governance, metrics for work that has no revenue yet, change management, and the structural reasons established companies struggle to commercialize new ideas even when they see them coming.
At the master’s level, expect roughly 30 to 36 credits with a required core, electives, and an applied capstone. At the bachelor’s level, expect roughly 120 credits, of which the innovation content is a concentration or elective sequence of perhaps four to six courses within a broader business major.
The work splits into roughly three shapes. Corporate innovation roles sit inside established firms – titles include innovation manager, product manager, strategy analyst, and new ventures lead – and involve running discovery, building business cases, and shepherding projects through internal funding. Consulting roles apply the same methods across client organizations and are commonly entered as management analysts. Founder and early-venture roles apply the training to your own company, where the degree matters far less than the venture does.
Titles in this field are unusually inconsistent, and “innovation” in a job title sometimes describes real product authority and sometimes describes an internal facilitation role with no budget. Read the responsibilities and ask who controls funding.
