A master’s in industrial design serves two very different students. One is converting into design from engineering, business, architecture, or another design discipline and needs the studio training a bachelor’s would have provided. The other already works as a designer and wants depth in research, strategy, a specialization such as medical devices or transportation, or the credential used in teaching. The degree titles reflect that split: Master of Industrial Design (MID), MFA in Industrial or Product Design, MS in Design or Design Research, and various MA titles.

It is a graduate design degree built around studio projects and a thesis or capstone, delivered online or in a low-residency mix. Programs typically combine advanced studio, design research methods, materials and manufacturing, and a self-directed final project that becomes the centerpiece of your portfolio.
The MID is the professional design master’s, oriented toward practice. The MFA is the terminal studio degree in art and design and is the credential most often listed in design teaching searches. The MS is usually more research-oriented, sometimes with a human factors, engineering, or design-research emphasis and a written thesis rather than a project. Read the required core and the thesis requirement; the letters vary more between schools than the content does.
Not always. Many programs run a conversion or first-year track for applicants from other fields, adding foundation studio, sketching, and CAD before the graduate core. If you already hold a design bachelor’s, ask whether that track can be waived, because it can add a substantial number of credits.

Choose the MID if you want a professional practice degree and intend to work in a studio. Choose the MFA if you want the terminal studio degree, particularly if college teaching is a goal, since design faculty searches typically list the MFA or an equivalent terminal degree. Choose the MS if the work you want is research-heavy: human factors, design research, or a role that sits between design and engineering.
Do not choose on the letters alone. Some MS programs are studio-heavy and some MFA programs are research-heavy. The course list and the capstone requirement are the honest description of the degree.
If you are converting from engineering, be clear about what you are buying. A design master’s teaches you to define what should be built and what it should be like to use. It does not make you a mechanical engineer, an occupation with a median annual wage of $104,110 and 9.1 percent projected growth from 2024 to 2034 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Some people take the degree specifically to move from the engineering side to the design side, and that is a real, deliberate career change rather than a promotion.

Requirements vary, but most programs ask for a completed bachelor’s degree, transcripts, a statement of purpose, a resume or CV, letters of recommendation, and a portfolio. The portfolio is usually the deciding item.
For applicants with a design background, reviewers want finished projects with visible process: research, sketches, iterations, models, and the reasoning behind the final decision. A folder of polished renderings with no process reads as a weaker application than a rougher portfolio that shows thinking. For applicants from other fields, programs generally want evidence of visual and three-dimensional ability – drawing, making, fabrication, photography, or comparable work – plus a statement that explains the shift honestly. Standardized test scores are often optional. Ask admissions directly what they weight.
A bachelor’s in industrial design is the standard professional entry credential and the route most working designers took. A master’s is the conversion route for people arriving from another discipline and the depth route for people who already practice. Neither one substitutes for the portfolio, and neither is licensed.
