The national median annual wage was $83,910, with the 10th percentile at $53,460 and the 90th percentile at $139,770 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Employment was 30,600 in 2024, projected to grow 3.2 percent through 2034, with about 2,500 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). That is a small occupation. Roughly two and a half thousand openings a year nationally means the competition is real and the portfolio is how it gets settled.
The adjacent occupations pay differently and hire differently. Mechanical engineers had a median annual wage of $104,110 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), with 9.1 percent projected growth and 18,100 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034); that path wants an engineering degree, not a design degree. Industrial engineers, a distinct occupation despite the shared word, had a median of $102,440 with 11.0 percent projected growth (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Graphic designers had a median of $62,960 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Mechanical drafters had a median of $71,550, with employment projected to decline 6.5 percent from 2024 to 2034 (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034), which is worth knowing if you plan to use CAD skill alone as the entry point. Architectural and engineering managers, a role some designers reach late in a career, had a median of $171,270 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Individual outcomes vary by employer, industry, geography, and portfolio strength.
It is a design degree focused on products that will be manufactured in quantity. You learn to sketch and model three-dimensional form, to study how people actually hold and use an object, to choose materials and finishes, and to design something a factory can build at a price. It is taught in studio, through projects that end in a presentation and a critique rather than an exam.
Increasingly the words are used interchangeably, and many programs now use the “product design” title. The older distinction is that industrial design means physical manufactured goods while product design in a software company means digital interfaces. Read the course list. If the core is sketching, CAD, materials, and prototyping, it is industrial design regardless of the title. If the core is wireframes, research, and interaction, it is closer to user experience.

Usually, yes. Most industrial design programs require a portfolio for admission to the major, and graduate programs almost always do. Undergraduate portfolios typically want observational drawing and evidence that you make things; graduate portfolios want finished design projects with the process shown. The two-dimensional and digital half transfers well: sketching, CAD, rendering, and critique over video all work. The making half is the constraint. Ask each program how students build and test physical models, whether kits or materials are shipped, whether a local makerspace or 3D printer is required, and how a model is evaluated when the instructor can only see photographs of it.
Industrial design curricula run on three tracks at once, and students underestimate the third one.
The first track is visual and formal skill. Observational drawing, perspective, and rapid ideation sketching come first, because sketching is how designers think out loud and how they sell an idea in a room. Then form studies: proportion, surface, transition, and the vocabulary for why one radius reads as expensive and another reads as cheap. Color, material, and finish work sits here too.
The second track is technical. Computer-aided design and surface modeling in tools such as SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360, or Alias, plus rendering and visualization. Materials and manufacturing processes: injection molding, sheet metal, casting, extrusion, thermoforming, additive manufacturing, and the design rules each one imposes. Human factors and ergonomics, using anthropometric data rather than intuition about how a hand fits a handle. Design for manufacturing and assembly, tolerances, and cost.
The third track is process and evidence. User research, problem framing, concept generation, iteration, prototyping, testing, and the presentation that carries a project to a decision. This is the track that most separates a portfolio that gets interviews from one that does not, because employers want to see how you got to the final object, not only the final rendering.
At the bachelor’s level, expect roughly 120 credits, with a foundation year in drawing and three-dimensional design, a studio sequence in the middle years, and a senior capstone project. At the graduate level, programs split between studio degrees for people continuing in design and conversion or leadership-oriented degrees for people arriving from engineering, business, or another design field. The work sorts into a few shapes. In-house corporate studios design one company’s products, which means deep category knowledge, long timelines, and proximity to engineering and manufacturing. Consultancies serve many clients across categories, which means range, speed, and more presenting. Specialization follows the industry rather than the degree: consumer electronics, medical devices, furniture, transportation, footwear and soft goods, toys, housewares, and packaging each have their own constraints and hiring networks. Medical devices and transportation reward technical depth; footwear and soft goods reward material and construction knowledge that a general program will not fully cover.
A large share of graduates end up doing adjacent work, and that is not a failure mode. CMF specialists, design researchers, prototyping and model shop roles, CAD and surfacing specialists, packaging designers, and design managers all draw on the same training. Some move toward graphic design and brand work, some toward user experience as products became part hardware and part software, and some toward the engineering side, which usually requires an engineering degree rather than a design one. Industrial design or a related field? Choose industrial design for manufactured physical products. Choose user experience for digital interfaces and interaction. Choose graphic design for visual communication, brand, and packaging graphics. Choose interior design for built interior environments, which carries its own regulatory path.
