An associate in health science is a two-year, roughly 60-credit degree that does one of two jobs, and you should know which one you are buying before you enroll. For most students it is a transfer degree: the general education and science foundation of a bachelor’s in health science, completed at a lower per-credit cost and often at a community college, with the intent of finishing the last two years elsewhere. For a smaller group it is a terminal credential that supports entry-level, non-clinical health roles – patient services, health unit coordination, community health outreach, medical office work – where the employer wants a college degree and some health-systems literacy but not a clinical license.
What the associate in health science is not is a clinical credential. That distinction matters because the associate level is precisely where the clinical allied-health degrees live: the AAS in radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, dental hygiene, surgical technology, and medical laboratory technology all lead to a registry exam and a license. A general health science associate does not. If you want to work in a clinical role after two years, you want one of those programs, not this one. Entry-level, non-clinical health roles: patient access or registration representative, health unit coordinator, medical office or practice support, community health outreach worker, and similar positions in hospitals, clinics, and public health organizations. Employers in these roles generally value the health-systems vocabulary and general college preparation the degree provides; the specific title and duties vary widely by organization.
Usually, and that is its primary purpose. Many bachelor’s programs in health science are built as 2+2 or degree-completion formats that accept an associate degree as a block. Confirm articulation agreements, whether the science courses meet the bachelor’s program’s lab requirements, and how many credits will apply to the major rather than to general electives.
Approximately 60 to 64 semester hours, typically two years full-time or three to four years part-time. Online programs often allow a faster or slower pace than the standard two-year plan.
If you want to provide direct patient care – imaging, respiratory care, dental hygiene, surgical assisting, laboratory testing – get the clinical degree. It leads to a license and a defined job. This is the most common form, particularly at community colleges and at universities that offer the associate as a stepping stone into their own bachelor’s program. The curriculum is roughly half general education – composition, mathematics through college algebra or statistics, humanities, social science – and half a science and health core designed to match the lower division of a bachelor’s in health science. The value proposition is straightforward: complete the first 60 credits at a lower cost and with more scheduling flexibility, then transfer with the general education block satisfied. The risk is equally straightforward: transfer credit is decided by the receiving institution, not the sending one, so the plan only works if you know where you are transferring before you choose your courses.
Some schools offer an Associate of Applied Science in health science with fewer general education credits and more applied coursework – medical terminology, health records, patient communication, medical office procedures, community health. This version is built for students who intend to work after the associate rather than transfer, and it is a reasonable choice for that purpose. The tradeoff is that AAS credits transfer less predictably into a bachelor’s program, because applied courses often do not map onto the receiving program’s requirements. If there is any chance you will want a bachelor’s later, ask the school specifically which bachelor’s programs accept its AAS in health science as a block.

Associate programs in health science rarely have demanding admission requirements beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, but the science sequence inside the program does have prerequisites. Anatomy and physiology commonly requires introductory biology first, and chemistry may require college algebra. Before you enroll, confirm:
The lab question deserves emphasis. Some bachelor’s programs, and nearly all clinical graduate programs, will not accept anatomy, physiology, or chemistry without a lab component they recognize. An online associate program that delivers those courses without a credible lab can leave you repeating them later.

There is no programmatic accreditor for general health science associate degrees. Verify that the institution holds accreditation from a recognized institutional accreditor – such as HLC, SACSCOC, or MSCHE – through the U.S. Department of Education database. Regional and national accreditation both count for federal recognition, but credits from some institutional accreditors transfer less readily to others; if transfer is your goal, ask the receiving bachelor’s program directly whether it accepts credits from the associate program’s accreditor.
An associate in health science is a foundation, not a destination. It supports entry-level non-clinical roles and provides a transferable first half of a bachelor’s, but most of the careers associated with this field – health education, informatics, administration, and any clinical graduate program – expect the bachelor’s at minimum. If you already hold a clinical associate degree in an allied-health field, you generally do not need a second associate; degree-completion bachelor’s programs are built to accept the credential you have. If you are starting from zero and cost or pace is the constraint, the associate-then-transfer route is a sensible way to structure the same 120 credits.
