The occupation the degree names is the smallest one on the list. Geographers earned a median annual wage of $102,040, with the 10th percentile at $66,770 and the 90th at $136,660 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Employment was 1,500 in 2024, projected to decline 3.1 percent by 2034, with about 100 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Most of those jobs sit inside federal agencies. The occupations that actually absorb geography and GIS graduates are larger. Cartographers and photogrammetrists earned a median of $81,390, with a 10th percentile of $53,740 and a 90th of $126,950, on employment of 13,400 growing 6.4 percent through 2034 with 1,000 openings per year. Urban and regional planners earned a median of $89,320, employment 44,700, growing 3.4 percent with 3,400 openings per year. Surveyors earned a median of $75,440 on employment of 56,100. Environmental scientists and specialists, including health, earned a median of $82,220 on employment of 90,300, growing 4.4 percent with 8,500 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034).
The largest destination is hidden in a catch-all category. BLS does not publish a separate “GIS analyst” occupation; the federal occupational taxonomy files geographic information systems technologists and technicians under computer occupations, all other, which reported a median annual wage of $116,580, a 10th percentile of $55,940, and a 90th of $188,470 on employment of 472,000 with 31,300 openings per year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). That category covers many kinds of computing work, so treat it as context rather than as a GIS salary. It does explain why job boards list geospatial work under software titles as often as under geography ones.
Geography studies spatial patterns: where population, climate, disease, transportation, land use, water, and economic activity occur, and what explains the arrangement. Modern programs teach that through measurement and data – GIS software, satellite and aerial imagery, spatial statistics, and cartographic design – alongside physical and human geography coursework.
No. GIS is the toolset and the method inside geography: databases, spatial analysis, and mapping software used to answer geographic questions. Some schools award a separate GIS or geospatial science degree with a heavier technical core. Employers hire for GIS skills far more often than for the word “geography,” so check how many required credits are technical before you enroll.

No recognized programmatic accreditor evaluates geography degrees. Institutional accreditation is the check that matters; verify it through the U.S. Department of Education database. Two adjacent exceptions exist: the Planning Accreditation Board accredits urban planning degrees, and the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation accredits geospatial intelligence programs at participating schools.
Accredited online geography programs award the same degree titles as campus programs, and GIS work is done on a computer, which makes it unusually well suited to remote instruction. Field methods, surveying labs, and drone or imagery collection courses are the parts that need a local arrangement. Ask each school how it handles them.
Geography curricula stack three layers, and the third is the one hiring managers ask about.
The first layer is foundations. Physical geography covers landforms, climate systems, biogeography, and hydrology. Human geography covers population, urbanization, migration, economic geography, and political geography. Regional courses look at a place in depth. This layer teaches you what a spatial question is and why a pattern on a map is rarely explained by the map alone.
The second layer is method. Cartography teaches projection, scale, classification, symbolization, and the ways a defensible map can still mislead. Quantitative and spatial statistics cover sampling, spatial autocorrelation, interpolation, and regression on data that violates the independence assumptions of ordinary statistics. Remote sensing teaches how satellite and aerial imagery is captured, corrected, classified, and interpreted. Field methods cover GPS collection, survey design, and ground truthing.
The third layer is applied geographic information science. Expect a sequence that starts with desktop GIS in ArcGIS Pro and QGIS, moves into spatial databases and SQL, then into automation with Python, then into web mapping and services. Many programs finish with a capstone in which you carry one real dataset from acquisition through analysis to a published map or application. That capstone is what becomes your portfolio, and a portfolio of three or four defensible analyses does more in a GIS interview than a transcript.
At the bachelor’s level, expect roughly 120 credits with the GIS sequence concentrated in the junior and senior years. At the master’s level, programs split between research-oriented geography degrees with a thesis and professional GIS or geospatial intelligence degrees with a project capstone. The work sorts into four recognizable shapes.
Geospatial production and analysis is the largest. GIS technicians build and maintain data: digitizing, editing parcel and utility layers, managing geodatabases, and running quality control. GIS analysts answer questions with that data – suitability models, service-area analysis, change detection over time – and increasingly write Python to repeat the work. Employers include county and municipal governments, state transportation departments, electric and water utilities, telecommunications firms, insurance and risk companies, logistics operators, and agriculture technology companies.
Mapping and imagery is the specialist track: cartographers, photogrammetrists, and remote sensing analysts who produce and interpret imagery products. The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing offers certifications in this area, and drone-based collection has pulled a Federal Aviation Administration remote pilot certificate onto many job descriptions.
Planning and environment is the applied policy track. Urban and regional planners use GIS constantly, and the credential ladder there runs through a Planning Accreditation Board accredited degree and the American Institute of Certified Planners certification rather than through geography. Government and defense intelligence is the fourth. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Land Management, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration hire geographers and geospatial analysts directly. Defense and intelligence work usually requires U.S. citizenship and a security clearance, which is a hiring gate no degree removes.
