An online game program has to solve three problems a campus program solves by default: how you get critique on work in progress, how you get staffed onto a team that ships something together, and how you run demanding software on your own machine. Programs answer those differently, and the answers are the most useful thing to compare between schools.

How does critique work online?
Better than most people expect, when it is structured. Peer critique happens in forums or on a shared board. What to avoid is a course where “critique” means a numeric grade and one sentence.
How do team projects work remotely?
Through the same tools distributed studios use: version control, an issue tracker, a shared engine project, and a weekly live standup. Programs assign teams by track so a build has artists, designers, and programmers on it. Ask how teams are assembled, how time zones are handled, and what happens when a teammate disappears mid-project, because that is common and the good programs have a policy.
What is a low-residency program?
Mostly online, with one or two short on-campus intensives per year, often for capstone kickoff, motion capture or hardware access, and public showings. Residencies add travel and time away from work, and they are easy to miss in a catalog. Confirm the number of days and the notice period before you enroll.
How much time should I plan for each week?
It varies by course load, but studio courses run longer than the credit hours suggest, because rendering, compiling, and debugging are unpredictable. Ask each school for a sample weekly schedule from a production course rather than a general estimate.

The strength of asynchronous delivery for this field is that software demonstrations are genuinely better recorded. You can slow down a modeling or shader demonstration and follow along. The weakness is isolation: without a live cohort it is easy to work in a bubble and discover at the milestone that you misread the brief.
Synchronous online courses
Live sessions at scheduled times, usually a weekly critique or a team standup. Some programs run the whole studio sequence this way; more use live time selectively.

Live critique is the closest online equivalent to a campus studio, and it is worth some scheduling pain. Confirm the meeting times before you enroll if you work fixed hours or live outside the school’s time zone.

Setup: hardware, software, and bandwidth
This is where game programs differ from most online degrees. You need a machine that can do the work.
Hardware. Programs publish minimum specifications, and studio courses assume you meet them. A discrete graphics processor, adequate memory, and fast storage matter for engine work and rendering. Ask whether the school offers remote access to lab machines or cloud rendering for capstone work, which increasingly they do.
Engine. Most programs standardize on Unity or Unreal. Ask which, and whether you use it every term or only in a survey.

Version control. You will use it on team projects. If you have never used it, learn the basics before the first production course rather than during it.
Bandwidth. Uploading builds and large asset files is a routine weekly task. Upload speed matters more here than in any other online degree.
Before enrolling, ask whether the specific track you want is fully available online at that school. Several institutions offer game art and design online while keeping game programming on campus, or the reverse, and the program page rarely says so plainly. Ask about the track, by name, in writing.
How format affects workload and pacing
Studio courses are not proportional to credit hours. A three-credit modeling course can consume more of a week than two lecture courses combined, because the deliverable is an artifact and artifacts take as long as they take.
