The honest answer depends on which half of the field you enter and what you do with the four years. A game programming degree is also a software degree, and software employment is growing quickly. A game art degree is a portfolio-building environment in an occupation that is growing slowly and is shared with film and advertising. Neither credential gets you hired by itself. What gets you hired is finished, playable work.

Read those two growth figures side by side and the asymmetry is the whole story. The programming half of this degree points at an occupation with more than a hundred thousand annual openings across all industries. The art half points at an occupation with about five thousand, shared with film and advertising, in which games are a minority of employers.
None of the figures above are game-specific, and game pay generally runs below the all-industry medians for the same occupations, especially in art and quality assurance. Studio employment is also cyclical: hiring expands around funding and platform cycles and contracts sharply in downturns, and layoffs tend to hit in waves rather than gradually. A degree is a four-year commitment to a labor market that moves faster than that.
This is an argument for building portability into the plan rather than an argument against the degree. Programming students should keep general software skills sharp. Art students should keep interface, visualization, and simulation work in the portfolio, because those skills sell into product design, architecture visualization, medical and defense simulation, and training, all of which hire in steadier patterns.
Studios hire on the portfolio. That is not a slogan; it is how the screening actually runs. An art application is judged on the reel. A programming application is judged on a build, a repository, and a technical interview. A design application is judged on a playable prototype and the reasoning behind it. Nobody asks for a transcript.
So the useful question is not “does the degree get me hired” but “will I produce more and better work inside a program than outside one.” For many people the answer is yes, because a program supplies deadlines, critique from people who are not your friends, a team to ship with, access to faculty who have shipped, and a four-year structure that turns an interest into a body of work. For a smaller group, especially people already employed in software who can allocate evenings to game projects, the answer is no.
There is a third consideration. A bachelor’s degree in anything is a screening requirement at many employers outside games, including the simulation, defense, healthcare visualization, and ed-tech companies that hire the same skills. If you do not already hold a degree, that matters independently of games.
Compare the total cost of the program against three things: the work you would produce without it, the roles the degree actually reaches, and how long you can sustain the search after graduation. Game hiring is competitive and often slow for first roles, so plan for a gap between graduation and a studio job, and plan for the possibility that the first job is quality assurance or an adjacent industry.
