How is this different from a computer science degree?

Computer science travels better across industries; game programming gets you further into a studio pipeline faster. Is a bachelor’s enough to get hired at a studio?

The main undergraduate pathways
Game art and design
The art track puts most of the major credits into making things people look at and play through. Expect a drawing and design foundation, then 3D modeling and sculpting, texturing and materials, rigging and animation, environment art, lighting, and user-interface work. Design coursework runs alongside it: level design, encounter and pacing design, systems and economy design, and playtesting. The output is a demo reel and a set of in-engine scenes.
The risk in this track is breadth without depth. A reel with one competent character, one competent environment, and one competent animation reads as a student who has not picked a specialty. Studios hire character artists, environment artists, animators, technical artists, and interface artists as different jobs. Pick one by the third year and let the reel say so.
Game programming and development
The programming track spends its credits on code. A real language sequence, usually C++ with some C#, then data structures and algorithms, gameplay programming, graphics and rendering, physics, game artificial intelligence, tools programming, and often networking. Math is a genuine requirement here: linear algebra and vector math are used daily, not decoratively.
This track’s advantage is portability. The same coursework qualifies you for software work outside games, which matters because games are a small share of the software developers occupation and studio employment moves in cycles. Software developers had a median annual wage of $135,980 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS) and projected growth of 15.8 percent from 2024 to 2034 (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034), with almost all of that demand outside game studios.
Computer science or software development with game projects
A defensible third route. Take the broader engineering degree, then build games in an engine on your own time and through game jams. You give up the structured production courses and the built-in team, and you gain a credential that hiring managers outside games recognize immediately. Skills you may build
- Finishing a playable build under a milestone schedule, which is the skill studios actually screen for
- Working inside one engine well enough to debug it, not only to follow a tutorial in it
- Scoping a project down until it can be completed, which is the most common student failure
- Taking critique on work you are attached to and shipping the revision anyway
- Using version control on a team without destroying anyone else’s work
- Presenting a build to people who did not make it and watching them play without explaining
Prerequisites and course sequencing
Studio and production courses usually run once a year in a fixed order, so a missed prerequisite can cost two terms. Before you enroll, confirm:
- Whether the track you want – art or programming – is fully available online, or only partly
- Which math courses the programming track requires and when they are offered
- How often each studio course runs, and whether any run only in fall or spring
- Whether the capstone requires on-campus attendance or a residency
- What hardware and software you must provide, and whether the school supplies student licenses
If you are moving faster than a standard four-year plan, compare accelerated game design programs. Compression is harder on studio and capstone work than on lecture courses, because art and code both need iteration time.
Transfer credits and degree planning
Transfer credit can shorten a bachelor’s substantially, especially for general education and introductory programming. Rules vary by institution, so confirm:
- The maximum number of transfer credits accepted
- The minimum grade required for a course to transfer
- Whether credits apply to the major core or only to general electives – general education and intro programming usually transfer, studio and capstone courses rarely do
- Whether an associate degree in a related field maps cleanly into the third year
- Residency requirements, meaning a minimum number of credits completed at the institution

Accreditation and program quality checks
There is no programmatic accreditor for game design. Some game art programs sit inside art and design units accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and some game programming degrees live in computer science departments holding ABET computing accreditation, but neither is standard for this field. Verify that the institution holds accreditation from a recognized institutional accreditor through the U.S. Department of Education database.
Industry conference affiliations, engine “partner school” badges, and trade-press program rankings are marketing, not accreditation. They do not evaluate whether credits transfer or whether the institution is recognized. Institutional accreditation is the check that matters.
Building the portfolio while you study
The portfolio is the hiring gate, and it is built out of coursework whether or not the program says so. Practical habits that pay off:
- Keep a clean, polished version of every substantial asset or system, separate from the assignment submission
- Finish and publish two or three small games rather than starting a large one you will abandon
- Enter game jams; a weekend build that shipped beats a semester project that did not
- Show process for art roles – wireframes, sculpts, texture passes – because studios hire on judgment, not only on the final render
- For programming roles, keep a public repository with readable commits and a downloadable build, and be ready to explain any system in it
- Record which parts of a team project were yours, and be precise about it in interviews
Bachelor’s vs a master’s for game design
A bachelor’s plus a finished portfolio is the standard entry path. A master’s in game design is generally for two situations: you hold a degree in something else and are changing fields, or you want to specialize in a research-adjacent area such as serious games, simulation, or interactive media. It is not a requirement for studio work, and it does not substitute for a portfolio.
