What makes a game design program “accelerated”?

What does the weekly workload look like?
For lecture-style courses, heavier reading and more frequent deadlines. For studio courses, the real constraint is production hours: modeling, texturing, animating, and debugging take the time they take. Expect long evenings in an engine, and expect render and build times to eat into an already short week.
Does compression hurt the portfolio?
Usually yes, if you let it. Portfolio pieces improve through iteration – critique, revision, playtest, revision again – and a five-week term allows perhaps one real revision pass. The workaround is to treat course deliverables as first drafts and keep polishing them after the term ends, on your own schedule.
Can transfer credits reduce time to completion?
Often substantially, particularly for general education, math, and introductory programming. Studio, engine, and capstone courses transfer far less readily because programs want their own sequence and their own toolchain. Ask for a credit evaluation in writing before enrolling.

The mechanics are consistent across schools. Terms are short and back to back. You usually take one or two courses at a time rather than four or five. Credit totals stay the same: about 120 semester hours for a bachelor’s, typically 30 to 45 for a master’s. Because terms run year-round, a student who never takes a break can finish a bachelor’s noticeably faster than four years, and a master’s in around a year.
The compression is honest about lecture material. A game history course, a design theory course, or a math course can be delivered in six weeks without much loss, because the work is reading, problem sets, and writing. Those are the courses accelerated formats handle well.
Where the model strains is production. A 3D modeling course asks you to produce assets. An animation course asks you to produce cycles. A gameplay programming course asks you to produce working systems and then debug them, which is the least predictable time cost in the entire degree. None of that scales down cleanly. Two students given six weeks and fifteen weeks for the same brief will not turn in comparable work, and the difference shows up in the portfolio, which is what studios actually read.
A second, quieter problem is team coordination. Game programs depend on cross-disciplinary team projects. On a short clock, with classmates in several time zones, the coordination overhead consumes a larger share of the term. Ask how the program schedules team work in an accelerated calendar, and whether the capstone sequence runs on a longer calendar than the rest of the degree. At many schools it does, and that is a good sign.

Before you enroll, ask the admissions office for the actual term calendar for the studio and capstone sequence, not the general term calendar. Programs frequently advertise five-week terms and then run production courses across two terms. That detail changes the entire timeline you are planning around.
What to compare before choosing a program
Term length and academic calendar
Get the calendar for all four years, not the marketing summary. Check how many terms run per year, whether there is a required break, and whether studio courses are offered every term or once a year. A course offered once a year in a fixed sequence can undo the time savings entirely if you miss it.
Course intensity and production hours
Ask how many hours per week the program expects for studio courses specifically. Then add your own render, build, and debugging time, which is not in anyone’s syllabus estimate. If you are working full time, an accelerated studio term is genuinely difficult to sustain.
Transfer credit and prerequisite policies
Transfer credit is the largest lever on total time. Confirm the maximum accepted, the minimum grade, whether credits apply to the major core or only to electives, and whether an associate degree maps into the third year. Also confirm prerequisite chains for the programming track, because math and language sequences cannot be taken out of order regardless of how short the terms are.
Hardware, software, and support
Compressed terms punish technical problems. A machine that cannot render your scene or compile your project in reasonable time costs you a proportionally larger share of a six-week course.
