The median annual wage was $102,030, with the 10th percentile at $58,600 and the 90th percentile at $177,110 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Employment was 57,100 in 2024 and is projected to grow 1.6 percent through 2034, with about 5,000 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). That occupation covers film, television, advertising, and games together, so the game share of those openings is a fraction of the total. Software developers is the occupation most gameplay and engine programmers are counted under: a median annual wage of $135,980, with the 10th percentile at $82,460 and the 90th percentile at $214,670 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), employment of 1,693,800 in 2024, projected growth of 15.8 percent through 2034, and about 115,200 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Almost all of that growth is outside games. Graphic designers, at a median annual wage of $62,960 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), is where some 2D and user-interface artists land. What is a game design degree?
A game design degree trains you to build interactive entertainment, in one of two directions. The art and design direction covers 3D modeling, texturing, animation, environment and level design, user interface, and the systems and rules that make play feel a certain way. The programming direction covers C++ or C#, engine architecture, gameplay systems, tools, physics, and networking. Most programs put both tracks in the same building and make you choose one by the second year.
What is the difference between game art and design and game programming?
Game art and design produces what the player sees and how the play is structured: assets, animation, levels, encounters, pacing, and interface. Game programming and development produces the software those assets run inside: the engine integration, the gameplay code, the tools the artists use, and the systems that keep sixty frames a second stable. They are separate hiring pipelines with separate portfolios. Choosing “both” usually means being average at each, which is the hardest position to get hired from.
Do studios care about the degree or the portfolio?
The portfolio, in nearly every case. Studios hire on shipped or playable work: a demo reel for artists, a repository plus a playable build for programmers, and a design document plus a working prototype for designers. The degree matters because it gives you deadlines, critique, team projects, and a reason to finish things. It is not the credential that opens the door. Where the degree does help is in adjacent employers – simulation, defense training, medical visualization, ed-tech – that run more conventional hiring processes.
Is there a programmatic accreditor for game design?
No. There is no recognized programmatic accreditor specific to game design. Some game art programs sit inside art and design units accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and some game programming degrees are housed in computer science departments that hold ABET computing accreditation, but neither is required or common for a game degree. How many schools offer these programs online?
In IPEDS 2024, 84 institutions reported bachelor’s-or-higher completions in the game and interactive media design and computer game programming fields, and 74 of them reported offering distance education programs (IPEDS 2024). The online offering is real but narrower than in fields like business or nursing, so expect a shorter list of accredited options and check whether the specific track you want is offered online rather than only on campus.
What you’ll study
Game curricula generally move through three layers, and the middle one is where students discover which track they actually belong in.
The first layer is foundations, and it is shared. Drawing and color theory or programming fundamentals, depending on the track. Game history and critical play, where you take apart existing games and describe why a system works. Production process: version control, sprints, milestones, builds. Nearly every program teaches an engine early, usually Unity or Unreal, because it is the shared workspace for both tracks.
The second layer is track depth. On the art and design side that means 3D modeling and sculpting, texturing and materials, rigging and animation, environment art, lighting, level design, user interface and user experience, and often a systems design sequence covering economies, progression, and balance. On the programming side it means a real language sequence in C++ or C#, data structures and algorithms, gameplay programming, graphics and rendering, physics, artificial intelligence for games, tools programming, and networking or multiplayer architecture.
The third layer is team production and the capstone. Good programs run a multi-semester project where artists, designers, and programmers work on one game with real milestones and a public showing at the end. That capstone is usually the strongest item in a graduate’s portfolio, because it is the only piece of evidence that proves you can ship something with other people. When you compare programs, ask how the capstone is staffed: whether teams are cross-disciplinary, how long the project runs, and whether the school helps students show the work publicly.
The work splits into recognizable shapes, and pay and stability differ sharply between them.
Art and animation roles – character artist, environment artist, technical artist, animator, user-interface artist – are counted mainly under special effects artists and animators, with some in graphic design. Projected growth for special effects artists and animators is 1.6 percent from 2024 to 2034 (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034), which is slow, and the occupation is shared with film and advertising.
Programming roles – gameplay, engine, tools, graphics, backend – are counted under software developers, an occupation projected to grow 15.8 percent from 2024 to 2034 with about 115,200 openings a year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). The important caveat is that games are a small slice of that occupation. The practical upside is that a game programming degree is also a software degree: the same graduate can take a job at a company that has never shipped a game, often for more money and with steadier employment.
Quality assurance is the most common entry point into a studio and is counted under software quality assurance analysts and testers, at a median annual wage of $104,300 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS) across all industries, though game QA specifically sits well below that figure and is frequently contract work. Narrative design overlaps with writers and authors. Production and studio leadership eventually reaches computer and information systems managers.
Titles are inconsistent across studios: “designer” can mean level designer, systems designer, or content designer, and “technical artist” can mean anything from shader author to pipeline engineer. How to choose an online game design program
Accreditation – confirm recognized institutional accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education database. There is no programmatic accreditor for game design, so institutional accreditation is the check that matters.
Pick the track, not the school first – decide whether you are training as an artist or as a programmer, then check that the school actually offers that track online. A program that offers game art online and game programming only on campus is not an option for a remote student who wants to code.
Portfolio output – ask what a graduate leaves with. The right answer is a demo reel or a playable build plus a repository, not a folder of assignments.
Team capstone – confirm there is a multi-semester, cross-disciplinary production course and ask how remote students are staffed onto teams.
Engine and toolchain – confirm which engine the program teaches, whether you build in it every term, and what software and hardware you are expected to supply.
Degree level – compare a bachelor’s against a master’s, and be clear that the master’s is usually a specialization or a career-change degree rather than a requirement.
Cost – compare total program cost including fees, software, and hardware rather than the advertised per-credit rate, and review how to evaluate affordability.
Game design or a related field? Choose game design for interactive entertainment specifically. Choose software development or computer science if you want the broader engineering credential and are willing to build game projects on your own time, which is a common and defensible path. Consider graphic design if 2D, branding, and interface work interest you more than 3D and animation, web development if browser and front-end work is the appeal, or mobile app development if you want to ship small interactive products quickly.
