At the bachelor’s and master’s level this layer grows and the technical layer shrinks, because the degree is preparing chief officers rather than new firefighters.
At the associate level, expect roughly 60 credits with the technical core dominant. At the bachelor’s level, expect roughly 120 credits, often structured as a degree-completion program that awards block credit for an academy, certifications, and prior service. At the master’s level, expect roughly 30 to 36 credits weighted almost entirely toward administration, policy, and analysis.
The work splits into three shapes. Suppression and command is the traditional path: you enter through the academy, work as a firefighter, and use the degree to compete in promotional processes for company officer and chief officer positions. Prevention and investigation is a distinct career track – inspector, plans examiner, fire investigator, deputy fire marshal – staffed in some jurisdictions by sworn personnel and in others by civilians hired directly, which makes it one of the few fire service entry points where a degree can matter at hire. Administration and emergency management covers fire chief and deputy chief roles, fire district administration, and the crossover into municipal or county emergency management.
