An online master’s in engineering management is a graduate degree for engineers and technical professionals who are moving from doing the work to directing it. The common title is the Master of Engineering Management, usually abbreviated MEM. You will also see MS in Engineering Management, MS in Engineering and Technology Management, and MBA programs with an engineering or technology concentration. The letters matter less than the required course list, but they do signal an intent: MEM is professional and applied, MS is more technical and sometimes thesis-bearing, and an MBA is general management for any industry.

It is a graduate program that teaches the management of technical work: engineering economics and capital decisions, project and program management, quality and process improvement, systems engineering, operations, technology strategy, and the leadership of engineers. Most versions end in an applied capstone rather than a research thesis.
Choose the MEM when the work you want to lead is engineering work, and when you want the coursework to assume technical fluency instead of teaching around it. Choose the MBA when you want general management breadth – finance, marketing, strategy, organizational behavior – and the option to move across industries or into corporate functions. An MBA cohort and alumni network is often the deciding factor for people aiming at general management rather than engineering leadership. General and operations managers, the broadest management occupation, had a median annual wage of $105,770 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS).
The MEM is a professional degree built around applied coursework and a capstone. An MS in the same field usually carries more technical or research content, sometimes offers a thesis, and occasionally requires more prerequisite mathematics. Some schools use the titles almost interchangeably, so compare the required core and the culminating requirement.
Usually yes, or a closely related quantitative degree in computer science, mathematics, or a physical science, with calculus and statistics completed. Some programs admit applicants from other fields conditionally, with prerequisite coursework attached. Programs that admit anyone are usually general management degrees using an engineering label.
It is required at some schools and strongly preferred at most. The coursework is built on the assumption that you have seen a project overrun, a requirement change late, or a supplier miss a date. Programs designed for early-career students exist, but they are teaching the same material to people with less to attach it to.
Generally no. ABET accredits relatively few master’s programs, and MEM degrees are usually not among them. Institutional accreditation is the check that matters at this level. Verify it through the U.S. Department of Education database.

The three degrees answer different questions.
The MEM answers: how do I run engineering work well? It keeps the quantitative frame, teaches cost and schedule as engineering problems, and assumes your credibility with the team comes from the technical side. It is the most efficient path if you intend to stay inside engineering organizations.
The MBA answers: how do I run a business? It covers accounting, finance, marketing, strategy, and operations across industries, and it is the recognized credential for general management, consulting, and corporate roles. If you might leave engineering entirely, or you want the broadest employer recognition, the MBA carries further. Management analysts, a common consulting destination, had a median annual wage of $101,860 with projected change of 8.8 percent from 2024 to 2034 and 98,100 openings per year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034).
The MS answers: how do I go deeper technically while adding management? It suits people who want more analytics, operations research, or systems engineering content, or who may continue toward a doctorate.
Do not treat these as ranked. A MEM is not a lesser MBA and an MBA is not a lesser MEM. They target different employers and different next roles. If the next role is director of engineering at your current company, ask the people who hold that title which one they have.

Requirements vary by school. Most programs require a completed bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or a physical science, plus transcripts, a statement of purpose, a resume, and letters of recommendation. Many online programs have made the GRE optional or dropped it entirely; some still require it below a stated grade-point threshold. Ask directly rather than inferring from the catalog.
The distinctive item at this level is the resume. Programs that expect experienced engineers read it closely, because the cohort discussion depends on people having managed something. If your experience is thin, a program that admits early-career applicants is not a lesser choice, but be honest that you will get less from the case discussions than colleagues who arrive with scars.
Applicants without an engineering background are sometimes admitted with prerequisite coursework in calculus, statistics, and occasionally physics or economics. Confirm exactly which courses, whether they carry credit toward the degree, and how long they add.
A bachelor’s in engineering management is the technical foundation plus an introduction to the management core. A master’s is the concentrated version, taught to people who already have the technical foundation and now need cost, schedule, quality, and organizational depth. If you already hold an engineering bachelor’s and several years of practice, the master’s is the natural step. If you hold neither, start at the bachelor’s level rather than treating the master’s as a shortcut into engineering.
