Online Bachelor's in Engineering Management: 2026 Programs

A bachelor’s in engineering management is an undergraduate engineering degree with a management core built into it. You take the mathematics and science sequence, a set of engineering courses, and a block of coursework in engineering economics, project management, quality, and operations. Some schools title it BS in Engineering Management. Others call it Industrial and Systems Engineering with a management concentration, Engineering Technology Management, or Engineering Management Technology, and those titles are not interchangeable when it comes to accreditation.

Yes. It is offered as a standalone BS in Engineering Management, as a concentration inside industrial or systems engineering, and as an engineering technology degree with a management track. IPEDS counted 170 institutions reporting bachelor’s-or-higher completions in this field, and 166 of them report offering distance-education programs (IPEDS 2024).

Is the bachelor’s ABET-accredited?

Some are. ABET accredits engineering management programs through its Engineering Accreditation Commission and accredits management-oriented technology programs through its Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission. Those are different accreditations with different consequences for licensure. Check the specific program name and campus in ABET’s own directory, because accreditation attaches to a program, not to a university.

How is this different from an engineering degree?

An engineering degree goes deeper in one technical discipline. Engineering management trades some of that depth for cost, schedule, quality, and organizational coursework. If your goal is to practice as a design engineer and pursue professional licensure, a discipline-specific ABET-accredited degree such as electrical engineering is the safer route.

How much math is required?

More than applicants often expect. Most programs require calculus through at least two semesters, differential equations or linear algebra in the engineering versions, calculus-based physics, chemistry, and applied statistics. Technology-track versions sometimes stop at applied calculus. Read the prerequisite chain before you enroll, because it drives the whole schedule.

How many credits is a bachelor’s degree?

Approximately 120 semester hours, and engineering-accredited versions often run higher because of the science and design sequence. Confirm the total in the catalog rather than assuming.

Will this degree make me an engineering manager right away?

No. Architectural and engineering managers are typically promoted engineers with years of technical experience. Graduates usually enter as engineers, analysts, planners, or coordinators and move into supervision later. The main undergraduate pathways

Standalone BS in Engineering Management

The most direct route. The major devotes credits to engineering fundamentals plus a management core in engineering economics, project management, production and operations, quality, and engineering law or ethics, ending in a capstone design or applied project. Where the program holds ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission accreditation, it is treated as an engineering degree by employers and by state licensing boards that require an accredited degree in the path to professional licensure.

Industrial or systems engineering with a management concentration

Common at schools that did not build a separate major. You take the industrial engineering core – operations research, work systems, facilities, simulation, quality – and add management electives. This route is usually the stronger technical credential. Industrial engineers had a median annual wage of $102,440, with the 10th percentile at $74,370 and the 90th at $159,860, projected change of 11.0 percent from 2024 to 2034, and 25,200 openings per year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034).

Engineering technology management

A distinct family of degrees that emphasizes applied practice over theory, usually with less calculus and no differential equations. These are frequently accredited by ABET’s Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission rather than its Engineering Accreditation Commission. That distinction matters for licensure in some states and for employers who screen for an engineering degree specifically. It is a legitimate degree; just know which one you are buying.

Business degrees with an operations focus

If the math sequence is the obstacle, a business administration or operations management degree covers scheduling, quality, and supply chain without the engineering science. You will not be competitive for engineering roles, and later promotion into engineering management is unusual without the technical background.

Prerequisites and course sequencing

The engineering core sits behind a long math and science chain, and that chain is the single biggest scheduling risk in an online program. Before you enroll, confirm:

  • Where the math sequence starts for you, and whether a placement exam applies
  • How often each required engineering course is offered online, and in which terms
  • Whether laboratory courses are delivered through kits, simulation, proctored sites, or short campus visits
  • Whether the capstone requires a team that meets synchronously
  • Whether the program is ABET-accredited under the engineering commission or the technology commission

If you are moving faster than a standard four-year plan, compare accelerated engineering management programs. Compression is harder on prerequisite chains than on standalone courses, because you cannot take calculus and the course that requires it in the same term.

Transfer credits and degree planning

Transfer credit can shorten a bachelor’s substantially, particularly for general education, mathematics, and the science sequence. Rules vary by institution, so confirm:

  • The maximum number of transfer credits accepted
  • The minimum grade required for a course to transfer
  • Whether credits apply to the major core or only to general electives, since calculus and physics usually transfer and upper-division engineering courses often do not
  • Whether an associate degree in engineering technology articulates into the major, and how many credits survive
  • Residency requirements, meaning a minimum number of credits completed at the institution

Accreditation and program quality checks

Institutional accreditation is the baseline, and ABET accreditation is the field-specific layer. Verify institutional accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education database, then check ABET’s directory for the exact program title and campus.

Professional societies such as the American Society for Engineering Management run certifications and conferences. Those are useful, but they are not accreditation and they do not evaluate degree programs. Only ABET and recognized institutional accreditors do that work.

Building experience while you study

The degree is a credential; the promotion is earned on evidence. Practical habits that pay off:

  • Take an internship or co-op in an engineering organization, even if the title is technician or analyst
  • Keep a record of the projects you scheduled, estimated, or coordinated, with numbers attached
  • If your state licensure path allows it, sit the Fundamentals of Engineering exam near graduation while the material is fresh
  • Learn one scheduling tool and one statistical tool well enough to be the person others ask
  • Volunteer for the cross-functional work most students avoid, because that is what management actually is

Bachelor’s vs a master’s in engineering management

A bachelor’s is the technical foundation and the general four-year credential most engineering employers require. A master’s in engineering management, usually a MEM, is aimed at people who already have engineering experience and are moving toward leading it. Taking the master’s straight out of undergraduate study is possible but weaker: much of the coursework assumes you have watched a project go wrong.
