Information security analyst. The core occupation for this degree. Analysts watch for and investigate intrusions, triage alerts from security tooling, run vulnerability scans and remediation campaigns, conduct incident response when something gets through, write and enforce security standards, and prepare the evidence auditors ask for. Day to day it splits between reactive work (an alert fired, figure out what happened) and project work (roll out multifactor authentication, close a finding, harden a system). The role has real subdivisions worth knowing before you specialize: SOC analyst, incident responder, threat intelligence, penetration tester, application security, governance and compliance, and cloud security each want different follow-on skills from the same degree.
Computer network architect. Architects design the networks that security teams defend, which increasingly means designing them to be defensible: segmentation, zero-trust access, encrypted transport, redundancy, and secure cloud interconnects. Cybersecurity graduates who go deep on networking are well positioned here, and the median is the second-highest on the table. Expect networking certifications alongside the degree.
Network and computer systems administrator. Administrators install, configure, patch, and maintain servers, networks, and directory services, and they manage the accounts and permissions that security policy depends on. A large share of security professionals come through this role, because you cannot defend infrastructure you have never operated. It is one of the most realistic first or second jobs for a cybersecurity graduate.
Computer systems analyst. Analysts evaluate how an organization’s systems work and specify improvements, including the security and compliance requirements a new system has to meet. The job is analytical and cross-functional, heavy on requirements, documentation, testing, and coordination between technical teams and the business.
Computer and information systems manager. The senior destination, and the highest-paying occupation associated with the degree. In security organizations this is the security manager or chief information security officer track: owning the security budget, building and leading the team, setting risk tolerance with executives, and answering to auditors, regulators, and the board. It is reached after roughly a decade of hands-on work, sometimes with a management-focused master’s added.
Computer network support specialist and computer user support specialist. Support roles resolve network and end-user problems respectively. They are the most accessible jobs on the table, frequently open to associate degree and certificate holders, and they remain the single most common on-ramp into security for people without prior IT experience. Their medians are also the lowest here, which is the honest trade-off of starting there.
Nothing in cybersecurity is licensed. That makes the credential ladder here shorter and more honest than in clinical or legal fields, but it also means employers substitute other signals: certifications, home lab and capture-the-flag work, and demonstrable hands-on ability.

No. A bachelor’s degree is the standard credential for analyst and engineering roles, and management is reached through experience rather than a required degree. A master’s is worth considering for security leadership and policy tracks, for career changers coming from a non-technical field, and where a particular employer or federal program calls for it.
In practice, usually yes. Employers name specific certifications in postings far more often in security than in general software roles, and certifications are how you show current, tool-level competence that a degree earned three years ago does not demonstrate.
