An online master’s in cybercrime is built for two groups: working investigators and analysts who want formal specialization in digital evidence, and career changers with a criminal justice or computing background who want the specialization concentrated rather than spread across four years. Degree titles vary – MS in Cybercrime Investigation, MS in Digital Forensics, MS in Cybercrime and Digital Investigation, or an MS in Criminal Justice with a cybercrime concentration – and some programs sit in criminal justice departments while others sit in computing or interdisciplinary schools. That placement is the single best predictor of the curriculum’s center of gravity, so check it before reading anything else.

MS in Cybercrime Investigation, MS in Digital Forensics, MS in Cybercrime and Digital Investigation, and MS in Criminal Justice with a cybercrime or digital forensics concentration. Some schools also place the specialization inside an MS in Cybersecurity, which shifts the emphasis toward defense and incident response. Compare required course lists rather than titles.

Most assume a completed bachelor’s degree and comfort with computing fundamentals – operating systems, file systems, and networking. Requirements vary by school, but most programs require a completed bachelor’s degree in any field. Common elements include transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose. Programs aimed at working professionals often weigh investigative, military, or IT experience heavily, and some prefer it to a specific undergraduate major.
Applicants coming from outside both criminal justice and computing are not automatically excluded. Some programs admit them with conditional status, a required bridge sequence in computing fundamentals or criminal procedure, or a recommendation to complete prerequisite coursework first. Letters of recommendation are common; GRE scores are requested by some programs, though many online programs are test-optional. Note that programs preparing students for law enforcement or federal work sometimes ask about background history early, since agency hiring involves a background investigation that the degree does not substitute for.
A bachelor’s in cybercrime is the standard entry credential for civilian forensic examiner work and for law enforcement hiring. A master’s is more commonly pursued to move into supervisory and unit-management roles, to compete for federal analytical positions, to pivot into digital investigation from another field, or to reach the depth that encrypted, cloud-stored, and anti-forensic evidence problems require.
