The bachelor’s degree is where cybercrime is most commonly offered as a named program. Schools award it under several titles – Cybercrime Investigation, Digital Forensics, Computer Forensics, or Cyber/Computer Forensics and Counterterrorism, the classification behind CIP code 43.0403 – and most of them sit inside a criminal justice department rather than a computing department. Some schools deliver the same training as a concentration inside a criminal justice major instead of a standalone degree, which is why the course list matters more than the diploma text.

Confirm before enrolling that labs are actually delivered this way rather than requiring campus attendance.
Not directly. Sworn detective positions at state and local agencies almost always require completing a police academy and serving as a patrol officer before assignment to an investigative unit; the degree is a hiring and promotion qualification rather than a bypass. Civilian forensic examiner positions and private-sector forensics work do hire directly on the degree and demonstrated technical skill.

The most direct route. A dedicated major gives the field a full upper-division sequence: multiple forensics courses, dedicated cyber law coursework, and usually a capstone built around a complete case. The advantage is depth. The thing to verify is whether the technical courses are genuinely hands-on, because a program can fill a course list with cybercrime titles that are entirely lecture and reading.
Common, and often a reasonable trade. You get the full criminal justice core – policing, courts, corrections, criminology, criminal law – with a concentration of four to six cybercrime courses layered on top. The breadth is genuine insurance if you decide investigative technical work is not what you want, since the degree still supports the wider criminal justice field. Some students reach similar work from the computing side, through a cybersecurity degree with digital forensics and incident response electives. This produces stronger technical and systems skills and weaker legal and procedural grounding. There is no programmatic accreditor for cybercrime or digital forensics degrees. Verify that the institution holds accreditation from a recognized institutional accreditor – such as HLC or SACSCOC – through the U.S. Department of Education database.
A bachelor’s is the standard entry credential for civilian forensic examiner work and for law enforcement hiring, and it is the level at which the named degree is most widely offered. A master’s in cybercrime is more often pursued by working investigators seeking promotion, by people entering from criminal justice or computing who want the specialization concentrated into two years, and by those aiming at policy, supervisory, or federal analytical roles.
