What you’ll study

Crime analysis curricula generally move through three layers, and students who expect the work to look like television are usually surprised by the first two.

The first layer is the criminal justice system itself. You cannot analyze incident data without understanding how it is generated: how calls for service are coded, what an offense report contains, how arrest and clearance decisions get made, and where the records management system introduces errors. Analysts spend a real share of their time on data quality problems that originate in how a patrol officer classified an incident at 3 a.m. Courses in policing, criminal law, and criminal justice research methods build that foundation.

Applied statistics covers descriptive measures, rates and denominators, distributions, correlation, and enough inferential work to know when an apparent increase is noise.
