This is the dominant format in online construction management programs, and for good reason: a superintendent on a 6 a.m. start cannot attend a 10 a.m. lecture. The tradeoff is that when your schedule logic produces a result you cannot explain, help arrives on office-hours or forum time rather than immediately.

Synchronous online courses

Synchronous courses are built around scheduled live sessions students attend online.

Typical characteristics

  • Real-time lectures, plan walkthroughs, or live software demonstrations

This format works well for the software-heavy courses, where watching an instructor build an estimate or a schedule live is worth more than reading about it. Hybrid online formats

Hybrid formats combine asynchronous coursework with periodic live sessions.

Construction management coursework is tool-heavy, and the tools are part of the curriculum rather than an accessory to it. Expect some combination of:

This is the part of an online construction management degree that requires the most planning, and the answer varies more between schools than anything else in the format.

Many programs, including most ACCE-accredited bachelor’s programs, require documented construction work experience or an internship. Some courses assign site visits or field observations that you arrange locally. If you already work in construction, these requirements are usually satisfiable through your current job, but the program will specify the documentation – often supervisor verification plus a written report rather than simply a pay stub.

If you are not currently working in construction, ask directly how the program supports remote students in finding placements. A program built for practitioners may have no placement apparatus at all, which turns a graduation requirement into your problem to solve.
