A master’s in construction management is a mid-career degree far more often than an early one. The people in these programs are typically project managers moving toward senior or executive positions, engineers and architects crossing over to the delivery side of the industry, and experienced field leaders taking on owner-side, development, or program management work. The curriculum reflects that: it assumes you know what a submittal is and spends its time on financial management, risk, advanced scheduling, and construction law.
Titles vary. Master of Science in Construction Management is the most common. Master of Construction Management (MCM) generally signals a professional rather than research orientation. Some schools deliver similar training as an MS in Civil Engineering with a construction engineering and management concentration, which carries more technical depth, or as an MBA with a construction or real estate concentration, which trades construction specifics for general business breadth. Compare required course lists rather than titles.
It is a graduate program covering advanced project delivery: construction financial management, risk analysis, advanced scheduling and claims, construction law, and organizational leadership. It assumes working knowledge of construction practice and builds management depth on top of it rather than teaching means and methods from the beginning.
Typically 30 to 36 semester hours, commonly one to two years full-time and longer part-time. Because most students are working full-time in the industry, many programs are structured around a two- or three-year part-time pace.
Not usually. Programs commonly admit applicants from engineering, architecture, business, and other backgrounds, and often admit experienced practitioners whose bachelor’s is in an unrelated field. What varies is the bridge requirement – applicants without construction coursework may need foundational courses in methods, estimating, or scheduling before the graduate core.
Frequently, yes. Many construction management master’s programs prefer or require several years of industry experience, and some weigh it heavily enough to offset a modest undergraduate record. Programs designed for career changers are the exception. Ask each school directly.
They serve different goals. A construction management master’s goes deep on delivery, contracts, and construction finance, and is the better fit for advancing within contracting or owner-side project work. An MBA is broader and more portable, and is the better fit if you are heading toward general executive management or ownership of a business. Some students choose an MBA with a construction or real estate concentration to split the difference.
ACCE accredits construction management programs at the associate, bachelor’s, and master’s levels, but master’s accreditation is far less common than bachelor’s. Its absence at the graduate level says less than it would at the undergraduate level. Institutional accreditation remains the check that matters.

Requirements vary by school, but most programs require a completed bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose. Letters of recommendation are common, and many programs now treat the GRE as optional or do not consider it at all.
The distinguishing factor in this field is work experience. Programs aimed at practicing professionals often want several years of construction industry experience and read the resume closely; programs aimed at career changers do not. Applicants without construction coursework – engineers, architects, business majors, and experienced practitioners with unrelated degrees – are commonly admitted with a bridge requirement in construction methods, estimating, or scheduling. Ask admissions what that bridge consists of and whether it carries additional cost and time, since it can add a term to the program.
A bachelor’s in construction management is the working credential of the field, and for most careers in contracting it is sufficient on its own. A master’s is generally pursued for one of three reasons: to move from project management toward senior or executive management, to cross into construction from engineering, architecture, or another field, or to specialize in areas such as scheduling and claims, heavy civil, or development where the graduate coursework is genuinely additive.
