The bachelor’s degree is the center of gravity in construction management. It is the credential most general contractors screen for when hiring project engineers and assistant project managers, it is the level at which ACCE accreditation is most widely held, and it is the degree online programs are built around – largely because so many of the students are adults already working on job sites who need the classroom half of the qualification without leaving the field.
Common titles include Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, BS in Construction Science, BS in Construction Engineering Technology, and Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Management. The titles signal different emphases – construction science and engineering technology programs typically carry more technical and structural coursework – so read the required course list rather than the diploma text.
It is a four-year undergraduate degree that trains you to estimate, schedule, contract for, and supervise construction work. The core is quantitative – quantity takeoff, cost estimating, critical path scheduling, and cost control – surrounded by construction methods and materials, building codes, construction law, safety administration, and project delivery methods.
Approximately 120 semester hours, typically four years full-time. Students entering with an associate degree, prior college credit, or a completion-degree pathway frequently finish the remaining upper-division coursework in about two years.
It is designed for that student. Estimating and scheduling coursework builds directly on knowing how work actually gets sequenced and installed, and many online programs structure the degree as a completion pathway for people holding an associate degree, an apprenticeship credential, or documented field experience.
Generally college algebra and trigonometry, often a statistics course, and in construction science or engineering technology programs, applied calculus and applied mechanics or structures. It is less mathematically demanding than a civil engineering degree, but the estimating and structures coursework is quantitative and cannot be avoided.
No, and plenty of solid programs do not hold it. ACCE accreditation is a meaningful quality signal specific to construction management and is preferred by some employers, but institutional accreditation is the requirement. Check the program’s status with ACCE directly rather than relying on how it is described in marketing materials.
Not usually on day one. Most graduates start as a field engineer, project engineer, assistant project manager, or estimator and move into full project management after several years of project experience. Graduates who already have substantial field experience often move faster.

This is the pathway that makes online construction management degrees worth examining closely, because the credit question determines whether the degree takes two years or four.
Programs vary widely in how they treat prior learning. Some accept an associate of applied science in a construction trade or in construction technology as a full lower-division block. Some grant credit for completed apprenticeships, journeyman licensure, or industry certifications. Some grant credit for documented work experience through prior learning assessment, which typically requires a portfolio rather than a transcript. And some accept none of it toward the major core, applying everything as general electives – which leaves the degree at close to full length.
Before you enroll, ask each school in writing:
Many construction management programs, and most ACCE-accredited ones, require documented construction work experience or an internship before graduation. For students already employed in the industry this is usually satisfied by current work, but it has to be documented in the form the program requires, which sometimes means supervisor verification and a reflective report rather than a pay stub.
If you are entering the field without construction experience, ask how the program places remote students into internships. A program built primarily for working professionals may not have a placement apparatus for students who are not already employed in construction.
Verify that the institution holds accreditation from a recognized institutional accreditor – such as HLC or SACSCOC – through the U.S. Department of Education database. That is the baseline requirement.
A bachelor’s is the working credential in this field. It is what employers screen for at the project engineer and assistant project manager level, and it is sufficient for a full career track into project management and beyond. A master’s in construction management is generally pursued later, by people moving toward senior or executive management, owner-side and development work, or a specialty such as heavy civil, scheduling, or claims – and frequently by engineers and architects moving to the delivery side of the industry.
