A master’s in cloud computing is a specialization degree rather than an entry credential. Most students who enroll already work in IT, systems administration, or software development and want structured training in architecture, security, and governance at a scale their current job does not expose them to. Programs appear under several titles – MS in Cloud Computing, MS in Cloud Architecture, MS in Cloud Computing Management, or a cloud track inside an MS in Computer Science or Information Technology – and the differences between them are real, so the course list matters more than the diploma text.

It is a graduate program that builds advanced training in cloud architecture, distributed systems, automation, security, and cloud governance through online coursework. It is generally pursued after a bachelor’s and some professional experience rather than immediately after an undergraduate degree.
MS in Cloud Computing and MS in Cloud Architecture are the most direct titles. MS in Cloud Computing Management leans toward governance, vendor relationships, and cost and portfolio decisions. Equivalent technical training is also offered as a cloud track inside an MS in Computer Science or MS in Information Technology. Compare required course lists rather than titles.
Typically 30 to 36 semester hours, commonly one to two years full-time and longer part-time. Programs built for working IT professionals often stretch across two to three years at a reduced course load.
Most assume a bachelor’s degree plus working familiarity with networking, operating systems, and at least one scripting or programming language. Some expect prior hands-on cloud experience or a foundational certification. Applicants coming from outside IT are sometimes admitted conditionally or asked to complete bridge coursework first.
An architecture track is technical: distributed systems design, multi-region and multi-account topology, infrastructure automation, and security architecture. A management track covers cloud governance, cost and vendor management, migration planning, and team leadership, with less hands-on engineering. Some programs let you mix the two.
A completed bachelor’s degree, transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose are standard. Some programs request letters of recommendation, evidence of technical coursework or professional experience, or GRE scores, though many online programs are test-optional. Programs aimed at working professionals often weigh work experience heavily.

Requirements vary by school, but most programs require a completed bachelor’s degree. Common elements include transcripts, a resume, and a statement of purpose. Many programs also want evidence that you can handle the technical material – typically prior coursework or professional experience in networking, systems administration, or software development.
Applicants coming from outside IT are not automatically excluded. Some programs admit them with conditional status, a required bridge sequence in networking and programming, or a recommendation to complete a foundational certification first. Programs aimed explicitly at working professionals often weigh several years of relevant experience as heavily as the undergraduate transcript. Ask admissions directly what they expect rather than inferring it from the catalog.
A bachelor’s in cloud computing – or an IT or computer science major with cloud coursework – is the standard entry credential and is what most cloud operations and engineering hiring screens for. A master’s is more commonly pursued to move into architecture roles, to add security and governance depth, to pivot into cloud from another field while already holding a bachelor’s, or to meet an employer’s expectation for advancement into technical leadership.
