A bachelor’s in chemistry is a laboratory degree with a heavy mathematics spine, and that is the honest starting point for anyone comparing online options. Roughly half the major is lecture: general, organic, analytical, physical, inorganic, and biochemistry, plus calculus and calculus-based physics. That half delivers well online. The other half is laboratory, and no program can hand you a fume hood over a video call. What varies between schools is how they solve that, not whether they have to.

You can complete a substantial share of one online, and a small number of schools offer a chemistry or biochemistry bachelor’s with online lectures and structured hybrid laboratory work. Fully online chemistry bachelor’s degrees with no in-person component are uncommon. Expect one of four laboratory models: on-campus labs, an approved partner laboratory near you, short residential intensives, or supervised at-home kits. Ask for the model in writing before you apply.
BS in Chemistry, BA in Chemistry, BS in Biochemistry, and BS in Chemistry with a concentration such as biochemistry, forensic chemistry, or environmental chemistry. The BS carries more laboratory and mathematics; the BA leaves room for a second field or a teaching track. Some schools also offer a degree-completion program aimed at students who already hold an associate degree with laboratory coursework.
Approximately 120 semester hours, typically four years full-time. Chemistry front-loads its prerequisites: general chemistry gates organic, organic gates biochemistry, and calculus plus physics gate physical chemistry. That chain limits how much you can rearrange a schedule, which matters more in part-time and online study than in a residential program.
The American Chemical Society approves chemistry programs through its Committee on Professional Training. Students at an approved program who complete a specified set of advanced courses and laboratory hours graduate with an ACS-certified degree. It is optional, it is not required for employment, and it is not institutional accreditation. Its laboratory and instrumentation requirements make it uncommon for programs delivered mostly online, so ask the department directly rather than assuming.
No, and the assumption gets students into trouble. Biochemistry replaces some physical and inorganic chemistry with biology and molecular biology, which sounds less lab-bound but is not. Biochemistry laboratories involve assays, chromatography, electrophoresis, and cell culture, all of which need real equipment. What biochemistry does offer is more overlap with biology coursework that many schools already deliver online.
For the occupation BLS labels chemists, a bachelor’s in chemistry or a related field is the typical entry-level credential, and research positions often require a graduate degree. For laboratory support roles, an associate degree plus laboratory experience can be enough: chemical technicians earned a median annual wage of $60,390 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Those are different jobs with different ceilings.

The standard route. The BS carries the full laboratory sequence, two semesters of calculus, calculus-based physics, and upper-division physical and inorganic chemistry. It is the credential analytical and industrial laboratory employers recognize without explanation, and it is the usual preparation for graduate study in chemistry. If a program markets a chemistry BS online, the question to ask is not whether it is legitimate but where the physical chemistry and instrumental analysis laboratories happen.
Biochemistry keeps general and organic chemistry, adds cell and molecular biology, and centers on metabolism, enzymes, and macromolecular structure. It is the common preparation for pharmaceutical laboratories, biotechnology, and health-professions applications, and it aligns with health science and biology coursework. Biochemists and biophysicists earned a median annual wage of $127,410 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), but that occupation is dominated by doctorate holders. A biochemistry bachelor’s usually opens laboratory and technician roles first.
The BA trims some upper-division chemistry to make room for a second field, a language, or education coursework. It is a reasonable choice if the plan is secondary school teaching, science writing, regulatory work, or a chemistry foundation under a different career. Note the licensing reality: teaching chemistry in a public secondary school requires a state teaching license, which is separate coursework, supervised student teaching, and a state exam. Secondary school teachers earned a median annual wage of $72,040 and are projected to decline 1.6 percent from 2024 to 2034 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034).

Chemistry has the strictest prerequisite chain of any common undergraduate major, and online students feel it most. Before you enroll, confirm:
If you are moving faster than a standard four-year plan, compare accelerated chemistry programs. Be skeptical of compressed laboratory terms in particular: a five-week organic laboratory is a different experience from a full semester of it.
This is the section to read twice. Programs use four models, often in combination.
On-campus laboratory. You take lecture online and drive to campus for laboratory sessions, often on evenings or weekends. This is the most common arrangement at regional public universities and the easiest one to evaluate, because it is a normal laboratory.
Intensive residencies. Several semesters of laboratory are compressed into one- or two-week on-campus blocks, usually in summer. You get real instruments and a real fume hood, at the cost of arranging travel and time away from work.
Partner laboratory sites. The school approves a laboratory near you – sometimes a community college, sometimes your own workplace – and a supervisor signs off on your work. Ask how the school vets the site and what happens if no site near you qualifies.
At-home laboratory kits. A vendor ships reagents, glassware, and sometimes a small spectrophotometer, with experiments performed under video supervision or documented submission. Kits work reasonably for general chemistry measurement and technique. They do not substitute for instrumentation courses, and you should not expect them to.

Transfer credit is a large lever in chemistry, particularly for students arriving with an associate degree that already includes general chemistry laboratory. Confirm:

Institutional accreditation is the requirement. Verify it through the U.S. Department of Education database. Chemistry does have a programmatic layer in the American Chemical Society’s approval of undergraduate programs, but it is optional, it is not accreditation, and its hands-on requirements make it uncommon for mostly online delivery.
A bachelor’s is the working credential for analytical, quality, and production laboratory roles, and it is the prerequisite for everything above it. An online master’s in chemistry adds specialized methods, sometimes management or regulatory content, and can move you into supervisory work. Independent research leadership generally requires a doctorate, and that is a research apprenticeship rather than a coursework degree, so it is rarely an online path.
