Quick Answers

Can you get a chemistry degree online?

Partly, and you should know which part. Lecture courses, problem sets, and much of the graduate curriculum transfer well to online delivery. The laboratory sequence does not, so almost every online chemistry bachelor’s is a hybrid: you complete labs on campus, at an approved partner laboratory near you, in a one- or two-week intensive, or through a supervised at-home kit. A degree advertised as fully online usually means the non-lab portion is online. Ask each school, in writing, where and when you would perform each lab.

Are at-home lab kits taken seriously by employers?

It depends on the job. Kits can genuinely teach technique, measurement, and lab notebook discipline for general chemistry. They cannot reproduce a rotary evaporator, an NMR spectrometer, a gas chromatograph, or a fume hood, and analytical or synthetic laboratory employers ask about instrument time. If you want bench work, prioritize programs that put you in front of real instruments through intensives, partner sites, or a research or internship requirement.

What is ACS approval, and do I need it?

The American Chemical Society approves undergraduate chemistry programs through its Committee on Professional Training, and graduates of an approved program who complete a specified set of courses and laboratory hours can receive an ACS-certified degree. It is a programmatic approval, not institutional accreditation, and it is not required to work as a chemist. Because the standards include substantial hands-on laboratory and instrumentation time, approval is far less common among programs delivered mostly online. If it matters to you, ask the department directly whether the degree you would earn is ACS-certified.

Is biochemistry a different degree from chemistry?

It is a different major with a shared foundation. Biochemistry keeps general and organic chemistry, adds biology, molecular biology, and metabolism, and usually trims physical and inorganic chemistry compared with a straight chemistry major. Choose biochemistry if you are aiming at life-science research, health professions, or pharmaceutical work. Do you need a graduate degree to work in chemistry?

Not for many roles, and yes for some. A bachelor’s in chemistry qualifies you for analytical, quality control, formulation, and production laboratory positions. A master’s opens some supervisory and specialized methods roles. Independent research leadership in industry, government, or academia typically requires a doctorate, and biochemistry research in particular is a doctorate-heavy field. Decide which of those you want before you choose the degree level.


What you’ll study

A chemistry curriculum is unusually standardized, because each course is a prerequisite for the next one.

The first layer is general chemistry with laboratory, usually two semesters, taken alongside calculus. This is where stoichiometry, equilibrium, thermodynamics, kinetics, and electrochemistry get introduced, and where you learn to keep a laboratory notebook that someone else could follow.

The second layer is organic chemistry, again two semesters with laboratory, and it is the course that decides many majors. Organic asks you to reason about mechanism rather than to memorize reactions, and its laboratory teaches synthesis, purification, and structure determination by spectroscopy. Analytical chemistry follows, covering quantitative methods, calibration, error, and the instrumentation that most industry laboratory jobs actually run.

The third layer is the physical and structural core: physical chemistry, which is where calculus-based physics comes due, plus inorganic chemistry and biochemistry. Many programs add instrumental analysis, a computational chemistry or chemical data course, and a capstone or undergraduate research project. Expect roughly 120 credits at the bachelor’s level, with a heavier laboratory load than most majors carry.

Careers for chemistry graduates

The work splits into recognizable shapes, and they differ in credential requirements more than in subject matter.

Analytical and quality laboratory work is the largest entry point. Pharmaceutical, food, environmental, materials, and consumer-products laboratories run methods, validate results, and document everything for regulators. A bachelor’s in chemistry is the standard credential; documented instrument experience is what separates candidates.

Research is the path people picture, and it is the most credential-gated. Biochemists and biophysicists are projected to grow 5.8 percent from 2024 to 2034 with about 2,900 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034), and independent research roles in that field usually require a doctorate. Medical scientists, a related occupation, had a median annual wage of $103,410 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS) and generally require a doctorate or a medical degree.

Technician work is a real and often overlooked destination. Chemical technicians support chemists and engineers, run instruments, and maintain laboratory operations, with about 6,700 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Many chemistry graduates start here.

Teaching splits two ways. Secondary school chemistry teaching requires a state teaching license in addition to the subject coursework, and secondary school teachers are projected to decline 1.6 percent from 2024 to 2034 (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Postsecondary chemistry teaching generally requires a doctorate for tenure-track work; chemistry teachers, postsecondary, had a median annual wage of $93,250 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS).

One correction worth making early: a chemistry degree is not a chemical engineering degree. Chemical engineers earned a median of $125,040 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS), but that work requires an engineering degree, normally from an ABET-accredited program, and the professional engineering license path depends on it. How to choose an online chemistry program

  1. Accreditation – confirm recognized institutional accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education database. Chemistry has no institutional accreditor of its own; ACS approval is a separate, optional programmatic layer.
  2. The laboratory plan – get the specifics in writing: which labs are on campus, which use kits, which use partner sites, how many days of travel are required, and in which terms.
  3. Instrument exposure – ask which instruments you will personally operate, and for how long. This is the single question that most affects laboratory hiring.
  4. Degree type – decide between a bachelor’s and a master’s, and whether biochemistry or chemistry fits the work you want.
  5. Prerequisite math and physics – physical chemistry requires calculus and calculus-based physics. Confirm those are available online in the terms you need them.
