Online architecture degrees use asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, and low-residency formats, and the format has to solve one specific problem: design studio. Everything else in the curriculum – structures, environmental systems, history, codes, professional practice – translates to distance delivery about as well as any technical coursework. Studio is different. It is a critic standing at your desk, looking at drawings you are still unsure about, and asking why. Reproducing that remotely is possible and some programs do it well. Others quietly reduce studio to uploaded files and written comments, which is not the same education.
So the question is not whether architecture can be taught online. It is whether a specific program has built a real critique loop, and what it still requires you to do in person.
Asynchronous coursework for lectures and problem sets, synchronous video sessions for studio desk crits and reviews, hybrid programs that mix both, and low-residency programs that concentrate studio into on-campus intensives. Most distance architecture programs are hybrid or low-residency rather than fully asynchronous.
You develop drawings and models digitally, share your screen or upload work for scheduled desk crits with a critic, and present at digital pin-ups or reviews where faculty and sometimes outside critics respond live. Good programs keep the review calendar fixed, require iteration between reviews, and record sessions so you can rewatch the critique.
A program that delivers most coursework at a distance but requires periodic on-campus intensives, typically one to several weeks, for studio, reviews, and fabrication. It is the most common shape for distance M.Arch programs because it preserves concentrated studio without requiring relocation.
Expect a BIM platform such as Revit, a modeling tool such as Rhino, AutoCAD, an Adobe or equivalent graphics stack, and rendering software. That means a computer with a discrete graphics card, substantial memory, and fast storage. Ask which licenses the school provides for students and which you must supply.
Studio dominates. A single studio course routinely absorbs more hours than its credit count suggests, especially in the week before a review. Plan for studio plus one or two other courses if you are working, and treat scheduled crits and reviews as immovable.
Sometimes at the pre-professional bachelor’s level. Rarely for a NAAB-accredited professional degree, where in-person studio intensives are common. Confirm the residency requirement in writing before enrolling, because it is the requirement most often discovered late.

Structures, environmental systems, materials, history and theory, codes, and professional practice generally run asynchronously: recorded lectures, readings, problem sets, quizzes, and discussion boards with weekly deadlines.
This part of an architecture degree adapts well to distance learning. If a program is fully asynchronous including studio, look closely at how critique happens.
Studio is where synchronous time concentrates.
Ask how many synchronous hours studio requires each week, what time zone the sessions run in, and whether reviews are recorded. Those three answers tell you whether the program fits your life.
Low-residency is the dominant model for distance M.Arch programs, and it exists because reviews and making are the two things hardest to reproduce remotely.
Ask what the school licenses. Educational licenses for major architecture software are common, and a program that expects you to buy the full stack yourself is materially more expensive.
