  • Residencies used for intensive studio, in-person reviews, model making, and shop or fabrication access
  • Cohort structure, so you meet the same people at each residency
  • A fixed residency calendar published well in advance, which you should collect before enrolling

Low-residency is the dominant model for distance M.Arch programs, and it exists because reviews and making are the two things hardest to reproduce remotely.

Tools, software, and setup

  • BIM: Revit or an equivalent platform, used for documentation and coordination
  • Modeling: Rhino, SketchUp, or similar, often with a parametric tool such as Grasshopper
  • Drafting: AutoCAD, still standard for construction documents in many firms
  • Graphics and rendering: Adobe Creative Cloud or equivalent, plus a renderer
  • Analysis: Energy and daylight simulation tools in building-performance courses
  • Hardware: A discrete graphics card, generous memory and storage, a second monitor, and a drawing tablet if you sketch digitally
