The master’s level is where architecture licensure usually happens for distance students. A Master of Architecture (M.Arch) accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) is a professional degree that satisfies the education requirement for registration in most U.S. jurisdictions. A Master of Science in Architecture is generally a post-professional or research degree in a specialty such as building technology, computation, preservation, or urban design, and it is not a licensure credential.

Two things make this level different from other graduate programs on this site. First, the accreditation of the specific degree, not the school, is what counts. Second, fully online NAAB-accredited M.Arch programs are rare, and most distance options are low-residency: mostly remote coursework with required on-campus studio intensives. What is the difference between an M.Arch and an MS in Architecture?

The M.Arch is the professional, NAAB-accreditable degree used for licensure. An MS in Architecture is usually a post-professional research or specialty degree, often assuming you already hold a professional degree. If licensure is your goal, an MS will not substitute for the M.Arch.

How long does an M.Arch take?

It depends on your undergraduate degree. Applicants holding a pre-professional architecture bachelor’s are often admitted with advanced standing to a track of roughly two years. Applicants from unrelated fields typically enter a longer track of about three to three-and-a-half years that begins with foundation studio. Programs assess advanced standing by transcript and portfolio, so the same applicant can be placed differently at two schools.

Do I need an architecture background to apply?

No. M.Arch programs routinely admit career changers from other fields, which is one reason the degree exists in two track lengths. You will usually need a portfolio, and applicants without prior studio work are typically asked for other evidence of visual and spatial thinking.

Does an online M.Arch require in-person time?

Usually some. Low-residency is the common model: intensive on-campus studio sessions of one to several weeks, sometimes each term, sometimes each summer. Treat residency travel as a fixed part of the program, not an optional extra, and confirm the calendar before you commit.

M.Arch tracks, in practice

Advanced standing (roughly two years). For applicants with a pre-professional BS or BA in architecture. Foundation studio is waived on the strength of transcript and portfolio. Watch for programs that award advanced standing conditionally and can add a bridge term if the portfolio is thin.

Three-plus-year track. For applicants from other fields. It opens with foundation studio, drawing and representation, and introductory building technology, then merges into the same advanced sequence. This is a full architecture education, and it is the reason a second bachelor’s is usually unnecessary.

Post-professional MS. For people who already hold a professional degree and want depth in computation, preservation, healthcare design, urban design, or building science. Useful for specialization and academic work. Not a licensure path. If your interest is the city rather than the building, compare urban planning, which has its own accreditor and its own career track.

Skills and outcomes to compare

  • Whether the comprehensive studio requires a fully coordinated, code-compliant project or stops at schematic design
  • How many synchronous studio hours per week the distance format actually requires
  • Whether faculty reviewing your work are practicing architects, and whether outside critics attend reviews
  • What software and hardware you supply, and whether the school provides licenses and remote render resources
  • Whether the program helps you start AXP hours, and whether it has firm relationships in your region
  • ARE pass-rate context, if the program publishes it, alongside NCARB’s own reporting

How to compare online master’s programs

  1. Verify NAAB accreditation on the specific degree and location. A school with an accredited campus M.Arch does not automatically have an accredited online one.
  2. Read the residency calendar before the curriculum. Required intensives determine whether the program is compatible with your job and your travel budget.
  3. Ask how advanced standing is decided and get the decision in writing before you enroll, because it can change the program length by more than a year.
  4. Confirm the studio-to-seminar ratio. Programs that thin out studio to make distance delivery easier produce weaker portfolios and weaker comprehensive projects.
  5. Check the licensure sequence in your state. Registration boards set their own rules, including whether AXP hours can be earned concurrently with study.

If a program markets itself as preparing you for licensure but does not appear on the NAAB list, ask directly which jurisdictions accept it and request that answer in writing. A handful of state boards allow experience-based paths without a NAAB degree, but those paths are longer, jurisdiction-specific, and can limit reciprocity later.

  • A design portfolio, usually the heaviest-weighted item
  • Statement of purpose describing the work you want to do, not only your enthusiasm for buildings

The M.Arch is the credential that makes registration possible, and registration is what separates the protected title from everything adjacent. Architects, except landscape and naval, had a median annual wage of $99,280, with the 10th percentile at $62,300 and the 90th at $161,420 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Employment was 123,600 in 2024, projected to change 3.9 percent through 2034, with about 7,800 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). Architectural and engineering managers, the senior firm-leadership occupation many licensed architects eventually enter, had a median annual wage of $171,270 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS).

A master’s is not the only sensible graduate move for someone with architectural training.
