Employment was 123,600 in 2024 and is projected to change 3.9 percent through 2034, with about 7,800 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034). That opening count is modest, and a meaningful share of it is replacement rather than growth, which is one reason the licensure path matters: the people competing for those jobs are mostly registered or on the register track.
Adjacent occupations pay across a wide band. Architectural and engineering managers had a median annual wage of $171,270, with the 10th percentile at $120,810 and the 90th at $262,760 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS); that role is reached after years of practice, not straight from a degree. Landscape architects, a separate licensed profession with its own accreditor, had a median annual wage of $79,870 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS). Architectural and civil drafters had a median annual wage of $66,150 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS) with roughly 10,000 openings per year (BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034), which makes drafting and building information modeling one of the more accessible entry points for someone holding a pre-professional degree. Construction managers, at a median annual wage of $114,990 and 8.7 percent projected change (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; BLS Employment Projections, 2024-2034), are the fastest-growing occupation on this list by a wide margin. An architecture degree teaches you to design buildings and the spaces around them, and to document that design well enough to build it legally and safely. The core is design studio: you are given a program and a site, you develop a scheme, and you defend it in reviews. Around studio sit structures, building science and environmental systems, materials and assemblies, construction documents, history and theory, codes and zoning, and professional practice. The degree that matters for licensure is a professional degree accredited by NAAB.
Sometimes, but the path is narrow. Licensure in most U.S. jurisdictions requires a NAAB-accredited professional degree, completion of the AXP experience hours, and passing all ARE divisions. Only a small number of NAAB-accredited M.Arch programs are delivered in distance or low-residency formats, and those usually still require in-person studio intensives or residencies. Online pre-professional bachelor’s degrees are far more common and are designed to feed an M.Arch afterward, not to qualify you directly.

Because NAAB accredits programs and not institutions, you still need to verify that the school itself holds recognized institutional accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education database, then verify the specific degree on the NAAB list.

Design studio is the spine. Each term you take a project from site analysis and program to a resolved scheme, then present it to critics in a review. Studio is graded on judgment, not on completion, and it consumes far more hours than its credit count suggests. Documentation and practice is where the drawing becomes an instrument of service: construction documents, specifications, codes and accessibility requirements, zoning, and professional practice covering contracts, liability, and project delivery. History, theory, and representation give you the vocabulary and the tools. Expect hand drawing early, then a digital stack that usually includes AutoCAD, Revit or another BIM platform, Rhino, and rendering and fabrication tools. At the bachelor’s level, a pre-professional degree runs roughly 120 semester hours; a B.Arch is a five-year professional degree and is rarely offered online. Adjacent design fields have their own credentials. Interior design has its own accreditation and exam. Urban planning has its own accreditor and a different day-to-day job. Landscape architecture is separately licensed. Engineering paths run through engineering programs and the PE license.
