The master’s in applied behavior analysis is the credential the BCBA pathway is built on. A bachelor’s can support the BCaBA. The RBT is not a degree. Independent Board Certified Behavior Analyst practice requires a qualifying master’s (or higher), BACB-acceptable coursework, supervised fieldwork, and the BCBA exam – then, in many states, a separate behavior-analyst license. That is why “online ABA masters” is the search that matters, and why program selection here is an eligibility question rather than a branding question.

A graduate program – typically an MS, MA, or MEd in applied behavior analysis – that delivers ABA coursework online or in a hybrid format. Fieldwork is supervised client work under a qualified BCBA, arranged locally. “Online” describes the classroom, not the experience hours.
No. The degree is one eligibility piece. You still complete BACB-defined supervised fieldwork, pass the BCBA exam, and, where required, obtain a state license. Graduation is not certification.
Ask the school, in writing, which current BACB pathway the program is built for: an acceptable ABA graduate program, a verified course sequence, or another route listed in the handbook in force for your cohort. ABAI accredits some university programs; BACB has historically recognized verified course sequences. Do not invent a match from a homepage. Confirm against bacb.com.
Commonly about two years full-time; longer part-time. Fieldwork often runs alongside later coursework and can stretch the calendar if a qualified supervisor is hard to find. Compressed terms shorten reading weeks, not experience hours.
A bachelor’s from an accredited institution, transcripts, a statement, and letters of recommendation. Psychology, education, or ABA majors are common; other majors are often admitted. Some programs want RBT experience. GRE requirements vary; ask rather than assuming.
No. A BCBA is not a psychologist license and not an LPC. Those paths run through psychology and mental health counseling. Do not treat an ABA master’s as clinical-psychologist training.

Credit totals vary. Compare programs on whether the sequence is currently BACB-acceptable, not on a rounded credit number from a ranking article.
Admission. Bachelor’s degree, usually from a recognized accredited institution. Relevant experience helps; it does not replace graduate coursework.
Coursework. Graduate ABA content aligned to current BACB eligibility. If the school cannot show how that alignment is documented, keep looking.
Supervised fieldwork. The online-format hard part. You need a supervisor who meets current BACB qualifications, activities that count under the current experience standards, and a logging system the board will accept. Some students complete this at a current employer; that only works if the supervisor and the work both qualify. Confirm with the program and the handbook – do not assume RBT hours automatically count.
BCBA examination. Taken after you meet eligibility. Pass rates belong to BACB and to individual programs that publish them; this site does not invent them.
State licensure. Many states now license behavior analysts (LBA or equivalent) separately from BACB certification. Requirements vary. Check the board where you will see clients, not where the university sits.
Recertification. BCBA status renews on a BACB cycle with continuing education. State licenses renew separately.

Most programs want a completed bachelor’s, transcripts, a personal statement, and two or three letters. Prerequisite lists vary: introductory psychology, research methods, and statistics are the usual asks. Applicants from psychology, special education, behavioral health science, and education are common. Career-changers are common too.
RBT experience is useful because it shows you already sit inside a supervision model. It is not a substitute for the master’s.
A bachelor’s in ABA can lead to the BCaBA and to technician work. It does not make you a BCBA. If independent behavior-analytic practice is the goal, the master’s is not optional.
BLS has no BCBA occupational series. The closest published buckets – therapists-all-other at a median of $77,930, special education teachers-all-other at $76,580, substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors at $59,350, and counselors-all-other at $50,860 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS) – are classification proxies. They mix BCBAs with other jobs. Do not read them as BCBA pay.
